I thought I would chime in as long as this thread brought up the subject of the criticism being heaped upon Bush and FEMA after Katrina. I have some experience with emergency management - hurricanes - in Florida.

First of all, this storm was the nightmare scenerio and as such, would strain and break any resources available. Here are the problems as I see them:

Lack of leadership. CNN and the media constantly criticizes Bush but the key roles for these disasters fall first on the Mayors of cities affected, then on Governors of the States. FEMA and the Federal Gov't are support systems meant to augment and supplement those local officials in charge. The local officials have failed. Local personnel have failed (see reports about 4-500 Police walking off the job, that is 1/3 of the Department) The city, understandably, has been destroyed from within and emergency response personnel suffer from the same problems as those caught in the disaster. The Mayor and Governors have been woefully inadequate in their preparation and after actions of this storm. That is not Bush's fault.

Community response. Hurricanes do not happen within minutes. People have several days of warnings and are given time to evacuate. When tens of thousands did not leave, they created a nightmare scenerio and were forced to use the "shelters of last resort" approach. Disaster plans account for these shelters. The Superdome was the best example, however, overpasses, highways and attics are also in this category. You see, once the storm hits and people realize it is dangerous, they cannot get to another state or city. They crawl into attics or trek to high ground highways just to survive.

Community Planning. I have read about and understand the economic issues regarding those who did not leave. It is understandable that many did not have the money for evacuation. However, all hurricane planning advises that for the first 72 hours after a storm people need to make sure they can survive on their own. This means water, medicines, food and any other necessities that they as individuals need. Within minutes of the storm passing, people were clamoring for these basic items and wondering why the Feds were not delivering these things immediately. I am afraid that the citizens of New Orleans did little or nothing to prepare for this storm and the aftermath.

Security issues. The CNN feeds have downplayed the violence that sprung up after the storm. Put yourself in the place of the firemen, rescue and police personnel. You enter an area to help and someone starts shooting at you. How many times are you going to go back in to this environment? Looters and roving gangs are not there to help others. When people decide to stay in the areas they complicate efforts to mitigate the storms.

This is a disaster of immense proportions and many factors had to line up for it to happen. The newspaper reports of using New Orleans as the nightmare scenerio for FEMA training are accurate. The city was always considered a potential disaster becasue of the levy problems and below sea-level location. While many are blaming Bush, neither he nor the Feds have pointed out where the real fault lies: the Government and community of New Orleans failed in protecting their community and educating their citizens on how to prepare and respond to hurricanes.

That said, I do feel terrible for those poor people who have lost everything. Please see various internet pages on how to donate and help (Red Cross is the best for your donations as they are charged with managing shelters during any emergency)

Thought I'd join the debate started by Thomaso276. (contains some unattributed press quotes)

First, an administration that since Sept. 11, 2001, has told us a major terrorist strike is inevitable, should have had in place a well-elaborated plan for evacuating a major American city. Even if there wasn't a specific plan for New Orleans -- although it was clear that a breach of the city's levees was one of the likeliest natural catastrophes -- there should have been a generic plan. George W. Bush said time and again that American cities were threatened. Shouldn't he have ordered up a plan to get people out?

Someone should have thought about what to do with hundreds of thousands of evacuees, both in the days after a disaster and in the long term. Does the White House really believe that primary responsibility should fall on volunteers, church groups and individuals? Or is it just stunning incompetence and lack of foresight?

How could the government have been so unready for a crisis that was so widely predicted? It is simply not true, as Mr. Bush has said, that nobody 'anticipated the breach of the levees.' In fact, experts inside and outside of government have issued repeated warnings for years about the city's unique topography and vulnerability, and those warnings were loudly and prominently echoed by the media both nationally and in Louisiana. For example see John McQuaid and Mark Schleifstein's award winning 5 part report from June 2002 http://www.nola.com/hurricane/?/washingaway/ in the Times-Picayune.

No-one can say this government shouldn't have known of the inevitability of this disaster unless drastic steps (I. E. Spending public money) were made.

So America, once famous for its can-do attitude, now has a can't-do government that makes excuses instead of doing its job. And while it makes those excuses, Americans are dying. I remember Bush's claim in the election campaign against Gore in 2000. Not the exact words, but he said something like "I'm a can-do guy, I've got the experience from being governor of Texas". Maybe these days the holidays take precedence over the doing.

At a fundamental level, I'd argue, America's current leaders just aren't serious about some of the essential functions of government. They like waging war, but they don't like providing security, rescuing those in need or spending on preventive measures. And they never, ever ask for shared sacrifice.

"Or is it just stunning incompetence and lack of foresight?" SteveC said. Yes, it is stunning incompetence and lack of foresight straight from the hands of a pack of ideological hacks. Well said, thank you, SteveC.

I do not disagree, but am pointing out that responsibility for these natural disasters start at the local and state level - that is clearly outlined in all emergency mgt. Plans. The federal government is not initially in charge of natural disasters. On the other hand there are many reports about FEMA being chopped up since being taken over by Homeland Security. My experience was before the takeover, so they may be less effective.

For example, in Florida (and most States are the same) the County Manager has to declare a disaster area for his county after conferring with the policy group of mayors, emergency manager, etc. Cities do not declare but provide input) the state (via the Governor) then authorizes state resources - such as state Emergency Operation Centers, State National Guard, State troopers, etc. With large hurricanes looming, they are usually warmed up and ready to be notified and immediately go into action. Then the State petitions the Federal Gov't. FEMA is also warmed up and ready to go. This can all be done quickly, but each level must fulfill it's obligation. As another example, the Red Cross is in charge of all shelters and charged with ensuring they are up to par. The Federal Gov't is not in charge of these concerns. The Sheriff's Office is supposed to handle security at shelters. Shelters of last resort have no standards. Shelters of last resort are completely unreliable. They are a lifeboat, not a cruise ship. My impression was that New Orleans used only shelters of last resort because people did not leave.

Each community has to determine how long it would take to evacuate their city. In my city and county it was about 12 hours (it was done many times) so a 24 hour hurricane warning still left time. If New Orleans was 48 hours for evacuation, then they have to start their warnings earlier. If you leave too late and are sitting stuck in traffic on a highway when the storm hits, your shelter of last resort is your car!

You may have noticed that the storm veered off at the last minute. Hurricanes are unpredictable up until 12-24 hours before landfall. Last year in Florida many emergency workers (power company trucks, tree trimmers, etc) were staged in Sarasota becasue one of the storms was going to hit Tampa the next day. Guess what? The storm veered and hit Sarasota locking in alot of emergncy repsonse people. Things go wrong, but people got out of the way and saved their lives. Over 200,000 people in New Orleans ignored or could not comply with evacuation. That is why this is such a disaster.

The Federal government does not identify shelters, verify code of shelters, put up signs on roads so folks know how to get out or how to get to a shelter of special needs, or manage shelters. Most shelters are schools, run by local school boards and under the State budget for education. I do not know of any Federal High Schools. This is a state and local responsibility.

If the local and state level dropped the ball (and judging by news accounts I believe they did) and performed poorly then the Feds are trying to play catch up. I'll guarantee you many elected officials and personnel from the affected areas attended Hurricane Planning and Mitigation two week courses at FEMA in Maryland. If you pay attention and learn the experience is invaluable, if you blow it off as just another conference you lose.

The training I attended was so intense some participants started crying! There is a two day real time hurricane disaster with fully operational centers, scenerios, phones, etc.

The state and local level also plans and trains for terrorist attacks but that is a federal issue - an act of war against the USA. Governors don't declare war. Just compare the performance of Guilliani to the Mayor of New Orleans or Pataki to the Governor of Louisiana. I saw the press conference this morning where the Dem. Governor had hired a retired expert (from FEMA? To advise her. Doesn't she have someone on staff being paid for this now? Oh yeah - here is info from their webpage:

"Since 1990, LHLS & EP has been under the leadership of two Directors, Major General Ansel M. Stroud and Major General Bennett C. Landreneau." And their last line: "The LHLS & EP staff in Baton Rouge is small when compared to other states, but remains poised and ready to serve the people of Louisiana at a moments notice."

I am not saying there isn't plenty of blame for this, but to single out Bush and the Feds is not fair because they do not run the City of New Orleans or the the State of Louisiana. They cannot respond until they are asked. If nobody asked until it was well into the disaster then the local officials are just covering their asses.

I noted there are some news bits about the La. Governor not wanting to give up control of law enforcement to the Feds. If the Feds are asking it is not because they want more responsibility (believe me nobody wants more responsibility during disasters there is plenty of work to be done) it is because they have no faith in the ability of the State to handle this crisis and decided if it wasn't being done correctly they had to take it over.

Finally if you were told that there would be a 80% chance of a train wreck on Sunday afternoon from the Retiro Station, would you get on a train to go to a BBQ at the Mansion. Would you get on the train without some first aid supplies, food, water and medicine if you were told there would be no guaranteed emergency response for up to 72 hours after the accident? There is little or no help available for up to 72 hours after a major hurricane hits. People have to plan for these events. This fact cannot be changed.

Thomaso,

I don't disagree that local authorities have their roles to play and undoubtedly in this instance failed to respond adequately (possible understatement of the year). From your subsequent post, I'd agree your knowledge of that is certainly superior to mine. My pitch was that central government surely has overall responsibility for a disaster of this magnitude, especially it wasn't if, but when, it was going to happen. And could happen again to any major American city (natural disaster or terrorist attack).

One Tree Hill,

I'm always open to other arguments. Please let me know specifically where my truth, logic, and reason let me down. For instance, please tell me whether the report by John McQuaid and Mark Schleifstein in the Times-Picayune (www.nola.com/hurricane/?/washingaway/ wasn't in the public domain. And which particular crowd is it that I hang around with, assuming you include me in that statement?

Thomaso.

Truth logic and reason will never fly with THAT crowd. But I applaud your attempt.OTH (who's posts about Pussy I love) please don't bring this sort of garbage into a serious debate. Are you saying Richard T and I are imune to logic and facts. How about this very simple fact. Last year the Army cops of Eng asjed for 180 million dollars to improve the levies around Lake Punch-my-train. They recieved 43 million dollars, However 280 million dollars of the billions in pork went to Alaska to build a bridge to an obscure island. Hmm Alaska red state, Republican senators. Looseanna blue state, mostly Democrats. Next year big flood but the federal government has no blame. Rove is putting the blame where? On the State of course, with it's dems in charge. When asked about a study to find who was at fault, Bush replies "There will be time to find fault later, right now lets save some lives." The fucking city is almost empty whos life is there to save? Why does nothing get investigated with this admin? Why because Congress calls special investigations. With Clinton in office we spent 50 million dollars to find out how he put a cigar in the fat chicks pussy. Lets see, Dem President, Rep congress hmmmm.

To Tomasos post. Yes sir I agree, the State and City didn't do shit. They let the good times roll and paid the price. The citizenry wasn't just forced to live like animals they became animals. They share their burden of blame without a doubt. No food, no water at the shelter they sent people. The cops taking off (I do believe some of those missing cops are dead though) Every negative stereotype of the welfare mentality on the 6 oclock news. I was going to open my home and let somebody stay here but I'll be damned if I'll take the chance on letting one of the animals in my house. I don't like the way this last week has effected me but I can't deny it has had an impact on me.

I worked a few of the evacuation flights on the ground when they landed and the amount of guns and drugs left on the planes (the people were told they would be searched before going into the shelters) was kinda fucking unbelievable. The people getting off the planes for the most part disgusted me. Not because they were black, not because they were dirty but because they were ungrateful. The only thanks I got was from my boss for donating my time and labor. I didn't expect a BBBJ but a "hey man thanks" would have been nice. I expect Texas will now see a severe rise in crime due to this migration.

My post may seem contradictory at first bitching about OTH reply and then saying what I did. It just pisses me off when anybody acts in a kneejerk manner. Argue your point I'll listen but don't group me in with anybody because I am in "that crowd" and I do think in a logical manner. I'm with Dickhead, I think our President is a disgrace. I think his administration is corupt. I don't understand why anybody on this board would be in support of them when it's always been the "conservatives" that are running you off to jail for buying a blow job.

I don't think there are any simple answers to these problems and certainly nothing that will make a good sound byte on the 6 oclock news. I think it's time poor blacks in the south stopped looking for somebody to give them something and started going to school, spending the time to get trained for better employment, learn to speak the language that the rest of the country speaks. I'm sick of not saying this like I'm sick of airport screeners searching mentally retarded people instead of just saying "All men between the ages of 16 and 45 of middle eastern disent must be stripped searched before flying. Lets start saying the problem simply. The poor, undereducated people in New Orleans did nothing to improve their lives in order to have the resources needed to flee the city did not even take the basic precautions to have any water or food. When they were stuck on their roof they didn't even snag a pot going by to boil some water. They Sat on their asses and complained that nobody came the day of the disaster to rescue their ass from the situation THEY put themselves into by the desicions they made not just that week but for their whole life. Lets start there, then lets go on to what responsibility the local government has (finally they are telling people if you stay we won't bring you any more water) Then lets REALLY find out whos to blame in this administration that has shown total indifferance to the poor in our country.

Sorry for this rambling disjointed post but I'm trying to work his shit out in my head. OTH again I fucking LOVE your pussy posts.

The mayor of New Orleans had 2000 school buses at his disposal and they never moved an inch. They are still sitting there.

How many people could he have evacuated with that many buses? Of course it's easier to sit on your ass and blame the federal government. After all, they have been providing free food stamps, free housing, and free medical care for the past two generations so why should the mayor not expect them to provide transportation out of the city?

Daddy R,

I agree with you points. I was trying to point out how the system works - or doesn't work. I am afraid you are right about Texas having future problems. Several years ago I was in Louisiana (Shrevesport) to work on an assessment team for their Sheriff. During a tour of the area I noticed Crips and Bloods (gang members) and asked how could that be. They were California problems.

It was explained that during the 70's when kids got in trouble or there were hard times they were shipped out to LA by their parents to live with other relatives. They returned fully indoctrinated into gangs and brought that back with them. Texas will be absorbing alot of problems in the next couple of years.

I can't get on a plane without taking off my shoes, but planeloads of people can bring arsenals and pharmacies.

There are many things about Bush and the conservatives I do not like. What I like even less is people who do not take care of their own lives and then expect others to be responsible. Here come the tax increases!

Finally, this morning, the Mayor of NO is on TV speaking clearly and issuing directives. I think he got some overnight training and advice on how to lead in a disaster and what his responsibilities are. This is a good sign of correcting mistakes and moving on. These people who stayed behind have got to get out. They are complicating recovery and forcing agengies to use resources better deployed elsewhere. They are putting rescue and recovery teams at risk with their stubborness and will soon be ignored completely. When that happens the critics will start all over again about how no one helped the needy. Grab them by the collar, throw them in a boat and fly them out.

Good luck and thanks for the efforts with the evacuees. By the way, just ignore the low-lifes and concentrate on those really in need. Low-lifes never say thank you. They will soon be housed in the Texas Prison System because they will not change their ways.

I have noticed a number of posts from Neocons (or their supporters) about how 'they' the 'liberals' cannot be reasoned with. First, off the word liberal derives partially from the word liberty and conservative? Well, it starts with con-meaning against. I guess they are against liberty.

Interesting position to take from a political party (sorry to lump you all together) that is known to be the most inflexible of any in the past decades or more.

Example- when asked during the debate, Bush admitted that he could not remember any mistake he had every made regarding his political decisions (he did admit, albeit indirectly, that he was a drunk and whored around when 'younger')

What fucking arrogance! This administration and the party in general are completely arrogant, inflexible and possibly the more dangerous since the Nixon administration. However, because Bush has passed laws to restrict public access to what our government is doing, we won't know the shit he is doing until long after his death.

It is a dangerous time. We are more hated now by more countries, our own government is creating more laws restricting us while letting corporation do whatever the fuck they want. We are becoming isolated and not by our choice. This can only make things worse and for those who say, were the most powerful so fuck the rest of the world. The old axiom of what goes around comes around can and probably will be applied to us in the realitively near future.

This admin doesn't give a shit about people, only money, corporate influence and bullying. Their actions are 100% contradictory to their words, it is unfortuante the public is too busy, stupid or blind to this.

I'm really struggling with this. I'm sick to fucking death of the entitlement shit of most Democrates (not so much the party but the members) Get a fucking job and live within your means what the fuck. I can't fucking stand the elitism of the Republicans (we got ours fuck you) This war in Iraq is a fucking sham, He's still beating the Sadam 911 connection regardless of the fact that his own Congress released the report saying there isn't one. I'm sick of the NeoCons talking about Democrate tax and spend when the two biggest deficits in our nations history were run up by Republicans. I guess lowering taxes while increasing spending makes sense on some worlds but I'm not allowed to write hot checks.

I think if Bruce and Bruce want to get married it's none of my fucking business. But then the "liberal" coalition on the supreme court says that the inbreed local government can condem the land that has been in a family for 10 generations to build a strip mall on it if the increase in tax base helps the comunity. It's like everywhere you turn there is an idiot taking some major shit from you.

I didn't lose much in this pension fiasco but let me tell you the widespread defaulting of pensions along with the restructuring of SS is going to put some poor fucking old people into the system. Perhaps the right to lifers will take another look at ethinasia. I'm also sick of most union members (and I'm in one) thinking that being in one means you get more shit while giving less work. I wish I had the talent it takes to be an entrepenur but I don't. I'm smart but not that kind of smart, I'll probably always be a working stiff. But I understand that in order for my company to thrive all of it's employees must produce more than they recieve or else the company goes away.

If the republicans in this country actually practiced the values they say they hold I would probably be one. When we invaded Iraq they were all beating the patriot drum. Almost ALL of the Sr officials had multiple deferments during Vietnam and with the exception of two Congressmen (or Senators I'm not sure) NONE of their kids where there. (Michael Moore is an asshole but he was right about that) I'm sick of this administration not responding to legitamate critisizm and passing laws hiding what they do. I'm also sick of the opposition siezing ANY little thing and trying to make it a big deal. If Rove leaked that shit about the CIA lady and it was against the law let him call Johnny fucking Cochran (except he's dead) and try him. I think ALL of those fuckers leak shit to the press, though Rove is one vindictive amoral son of a *****, so why are they crying when He does it.

One of the reasons I'm moving to Argentina is because the people there understand that their government is full of lying corrupt bastards and they by and large ignore it. Here most of these idiots actually still believe one side is better than the other and they are giving this regeim way to much power. I'm telling you that soon you will see the EEUU on those lists of none transparent governments. The Patriot Act guts 1 and 4 and lawsuits and court rulings have seriously hurt 5 and 7.

I know it's a rant and I know my spelling is terrible but I'm fed up and frustrated. I'm sick of lowest common denomonater government and a public policy made of 10 second sound bites. I think as a country we deserve more but we only have ourselves to blame for the shit we have. I love this country and the ideals it was founded on. I wish we could get back to them and fear we are in a serious decline that will see us lose what we have. I really do think we are a great country and I seriously am in love with it but I fear for it.

I cannot agree more with Daddy Rulz and what he stated is one reason (the chicas are another) why I plan to move in a few years.

Both parties are pieces of shit. But if I had to say one was worse it is definitely the hypocritical Republicans, just like in the 60's and 70"s it was clearly the Democrats that were by far the more corrupt and incompetent party.

What gets me is that the US government is no less corrupt than Mexico or any other county, the primary difference is is that we legalize it and call it soft money or some other shit like that. At least the other countries don't try to hide and lie about their corruption.

Arrogance, hypocracy and self-righteous superiority piss me off more than any other personality traits and the Republicans have an overabundance of this.

Isn't it ironic that we are at war with religious fanatics and that is exactly what this administration and the core of the Republican party consist of. The Republicans hate government to interfere in people's lives yet they want a constitutional ammendment to prevent:

Abortion.

Buring the flag.

Gay marriage.

Am I missing a fourth?

Isn't that government intervention? And 2 of the 3 are based on religious principals. Interesting hypocracy.

I think as a country we deserve more but we only have ourselves to blame for the shit we have.

I don't think it's the fault of most of us. I think there's a fanatical 20% of the population on the far left and another fanatical 20% on the far right that control the two party system. The other 60% of us would happily vote for a centrist leader from either party. But we never get that chance. We get to choose from a Massachusettes senator and a Texas governor for god's sake. Well given that choice slightly more of the 60% in the middle is inclined to be conservative, so the Republicans really have no reason to change their actions. I just wish the Democrats would get it together enough to run someone electable. That would force the Republicans toward the center too.

The anonymity of the internet tends to make online conversations (especially political and religious ones) the overweening province of people who want to stick pins, push buttons, and stir shit up. The Harvard Debating Society it ain't. Heck, I sat at a dinner a few months ago with a regular poster here who - to my face - was polite, proper, and friendly. When he got a chance to go back to the anonymity of the board, he starting acting like the fatass jerk that I knew before having met him in person. And this was totally without any political differences ever coming into the equation. And you want to add on debates about peoples' deeply-held personal beliefs in the hope that it will raise the tone of discussion on the board? It will just add hard feelings into the mix when discussing anything else.

And finally, you can't compare an off-handed comment that Jackson may have thrown out to deliberately making up controversial and offensive threads designed to infuriate at least half of the readership of the board.

Liberals Suck Ass. Bunch of Socialist who are trying to find fault with Bush to compensate for losing the election a 2nd time around for the White House and continuing to lose members in the Senate and The House. If the liberal cause was so great and supported by so many people, the DemoKrats wouldn't be losing seats in the Congress.

All Hail Bush, he has the balls to fight. Liberals just put their head in the sand and hope the bad people go away.

Bush had the "balls" to send other people to fight for oil, while he himself is a draft dodging coward.

By the way, Hunt, Thomaso didn't start this thread. His message was originally posted somewhere else (I think in the DirectTV thread). So, I'm pretty sure Jackson himself started the thread and moved Thomaso's post over here.

"Liberals Suck Ass. Bunch of Socialist who are trying to find fault with Bush".

Are you saying Liberals are Socialists? Bit like saying Conservatives are Fascists. Not sure of your political analysis here. Maybe you could explain further. And as for finding fault with Bush, there are plenty of Republicans around thinking the same right now. Or are they closet socialists too?

"All Hail Bush, he has the balls to fight. Liberals just put their head in the sand and hope the bad people go away".

We all know about Bush and his devoted service (or not) but what about Cheney. Do you know how many times he refused (always with a good reason of course) to serve in Vietnam? Is he a liberal too?

"People will disagree, strongly, when you debate politics and religion on a board."

Or agree. But we're all big boys here right?

"And it WILL carry over to discussions about virtually everything else."

Afraid I have to disagree, I haven't noticed any comments on this subject on any other thread. That's why we have as a separate thread "American Politics" and the generally mature tone of the board is honored here. Under the heading Chit Chat, and I'm quoting directly here from the front page of the forum, words by Jackson.

"This is the place to discuss politics, sports or anything else not directly related to visiting Argentina and chasing chicas.". Please note the inclusion of the word politics in the list of suggested subjects.

Again, if anyone isn't interested, please ignore these posts, like I do to anything posted by NIBU. Which is why he has his own section, so anyone who doesn't want to read it can ignore it. There are people who contribute to his posts and enjoy the discussion, as on this thread.

And to put the record straight, Thomaso276 really started this discussion (in a very reasonable way) on the Direct TV thread, (09-06-05 13.47) to which I responded. It was moved (presumably by Jackson, thanks!) to this location.

Hey, I loved the 10 Republican reasons when a light bulb goes out! How accurate to their behavior.

As a former Republican (until 1991)-the current crop of right-wing Republicans controlling / leading are a bunch of fucking Nazi's. This is based strictly on their words and actions with regards to their attitude about starting wars, treatment of prisioners, protection of our personal rights, freedoms and privacy and the rights of other countries to have the government of their own choosing.

If the political direction of this country continues as is, the analogy to Nazi's will become more accurate and more apparent.

It always seems silly to me when people claim that Bush was a draft dodging coward. It seems about as politcally relevant as the Monica Lewinski "scandal". Almost everybody tried to evade serving in Vietnam, which by the way is nearly 40 years ago. And the politicians that did go, like Kerry and Gore, seem to grossly exagerate their "combat" experience. Again, is this at all relevant? I don't think one had to have extremely stong contacts to "legitimately" get out of that war, and Bush definitely had them. I ask people like my dad, who served there, about the war and he'll tell you that he would have avoided it if possible. But he was basically a poor man and it was basically a poor man's war.

Willing to send another generation of poor sons to fight a pretty meaningless war (Afganistan I supported, Iraq I thought when we invaded and continue to think is a serious mistake) but was unwilling to do so himself. I'm a veteran and I agree that I probably would have done what I could to avoid Vietnam. But I don't dress up in flight suits for photo ops taking the glory from the Joes that did the work. I agree that his service is not relevant to the job at hand but the image that he cultivates really pisses me off.

I even agree that Gore would have made an abysmal President and Kerry was a poor pick. However attacking his war record was horrible, on par with attacking Max Cleland and saying he was unpatriotic. The swiftys were guys that felt he broke ranks upon his return and have nursed a grudge for a lot of years and leveled baseless and unprovable allegations against him. They were financed by an ultra right wing business man from Houston their only mission was to caste doubt by telling lies.

Again I would have avoided it if possible but stop acting like this warrior 40 years later. It's easy to be brave when somebody elses ass is on the line. All three of my Uncles that served in Vietnam went as volenters. It's their service I think he is shamed by. Three poor kids that believed in their country and answered the call.

All these God damn wars and we've never once been invaded militarily. The Méxican War was a land grab on a flimsy pretext. So was the Spanish-American War. And don't get me started about the revolution we fomented in Panama to steal the land for the canal. Why do we have to do this shit? We have plenty of resources. What business is it of ours if Guatemala wants to elect a socialist like Jacobo Arbenz in 1954? Why did we overthrow that government? Because the Secretary of State's brother was running the United Fruit Company and he wanted to hold down the wages of the banana pickers. What a load of shit. And what about overthrowing the freely and peacefully elected Allende government in Chile? They're gonna elect another socialist in the next election. Are we going to overthrow that one too?

Notice how we pick on small, weak countries. Brazil elected a socialist in Inacio Lula da Silva and we don't fuck with them; they are big and have a lot of resources.

Of course not too many neocons have studied history, or they couldn't possibly become neocons. Oh, well; I voted with my feet and am no longer paying US taxes to support immoral wars so I guess that is the best I can do for now, besides voting for whatever jackass the Democrats nominate.

After spending several years in the "War on Terror" I finally wised up and realized that there was more money being made in contracting in one year than most soldiers make in 20 years of service, if they're lucky enough to survive that long and return home with all of their body parts.

Veteran and retirement "benefits" has to be the biggest fucking joke played on soldiers. Walmart has better prices than the Post Exchange and private insurance companies have lower premiums for the same coverage as VGLI. "Why do we have to do this shit? We have plenty of resources."

At least thru the early 20th century, how did the USA get all most of its territory and resources? By taking it, usually by force, whether it was from the British, the Mexicans, or the "Native" Americans.

"What business is it of ours if Guatemala wants to elect a socialist like Jacobo Arbenz in 1954? Why did we overthrow that government? Because the Secretary of State's brother was running the United Fruit Company and he wanted to hold down the wages of the banana pickers. What a load of shit. And what about overthrowing the freely and peacefully elected Allende government in Chile?"

Most of the relatively small conflicts of the 2nd half of the 20th century were due to the Cold War. You think that some tiny country can't cuase a major threat? One little island of Cuba and its alignment with the USSR probably brought the world closer to nuclear disaster in 1962 than it ever was. I understand most of the meddling that the US did in the Americas during the Cold War and unfortunately it was probably necessary. I don't think is was necessary to try and intervene in places like Vietnam. Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Brasil, and countless other countries were very left-leaning at that time, and many still are (plus Uruguay, plus Venezuela)

The reason we don't mess with these countries now is because the Cold War is over. The USA would have neutralized Lula and Chavez in a heartbeat 30 years ago before permitting their election.

It was all 100% corporate greed and anything to the contrary was just spin doctoring by the Eisenhower administration.

What I meant by that was that the land stolen from the indigenous natives and purchased in the Louisiana Purchase (from others who had stolen it from the indigenous natives) was / is fertile and had / has many resources such as coal. Also it had / has good waterways. So was it really necessary to steal more land just to get other resources such as gold and copper?

Neocons should look at themselves just a bit more closely. They have become, perhaps, the most hateful / corrupt party in our history.

They hate gays and lesbians.

They hate evolution and anything else having to do with scientific fact-like global warming, polution, etc.

They pretty much hate anyone who isn't white.

They hate anyone who isn't a religous fanatic--like themselves.

They love only the rich and powerful, thus they hate the poor, the weak.

They hate protecting the environment-money / greed is more important.

They hate the UN and any country that disagrees with them.

They are also the most hypocritical:

They believe in less government and fiscal restraint- yet they are responsible for the largest deficit in our history (now and when Reagan was Prez)

They want Amendments against:

Burning the flag.

Gay marriage.

Prayer in school (amendment for this)

How is that keeping government out of our lives and out of our bedrooms?

Corruption-ever hear of:

Halliburton.

Oil companies.

Soft corporate money.

Sorry for the rant.

Liberals and name calling? Would it have been a liberal that put a poll in the field during the 2000 primary's asking people in the south if they would vote for John McCain knowing he was the Father of an illegitamate black child? (Hint GW's hatchet man Carl Rove, brilliant move though totally lacking in ethics but brilliant)

The liberals I knw don't resort to name calling but if saying our President and his administration is a corrupt disgrace is name calling then I'm guilty. However I'm also prepared to defend why I think that is true if you are prepared to rebut with facts. Most of the NeoCons I know resort to sound bites when debating.

Actually though I don't think of myself as a liberal. I detest fanatasism of any kind. I think I'm pretty moderate. I believe that less government is better (don't even try to talk about tax and spend Dems it's your guys that are increasing the size of Government not ours) I believe that if Bob and Bob want to get married they should be able to. I believe if your church doesn't want to marry Bob and Bob they shouldn't have to. I believe that like me, government should balance their fucking checkbook. I believe the founders wanted us to have guns in case we ever needed to kick the bastards out. Assault weapons work best. I think it's better to keep serial killers alive in prison so they can be passed around like packs of cigaretts for the rest of their life. I think that the reason prohibition was repealed (you can't keep people from doing what they want to do) is good enough reason to stop crowding the prisons with reefer people. I believe their should be term limits in congress, that it should pay worse and that legislators should NOT be able to exempt themselves from the law. I believe that the power to call special investigative commitees should rest with the party NOT in power but if nothing comes from the investigation all costs should come from the reelection funds of whoever called it.

OTH I do like your posts about pussy but you haven't said shit about what you believe here. All you have done is repeat the tired sound bites you hear from Rush and off of Fox (choke choke) news. Along with a host of other liberties? With "your team" on the "sup court" will you be jacking off to pictures stashed away in 5 years because this forum has been outlawed, along with sexy pictures; or there is a law making it illegal for an American to contract a prostitute anywhere in the world (similar to the underage sex law)?

One Tree, we have talked a few times, and I know from your posts that you are a young man who enjoys sex with women. You have a lot of years to worry about. I probably won't be ABLE to have sex in 5 years, but will probably just break the law if I am able, having little to lose. Dickhead, since you studied Guatemala, you should start following what looks like Guatemala revisited, possibly worse.

There was a lot of press in Paraguay about the US troops when I was there May-July, most of it negative. They were especially unhappy about the US forcing the legal immunity for the troops down their throats. But it appears that worse is still to come.

I have seen a few pieces that say the US is lying about building a base in Paraguay (which seems obvious, actually) and is building one in the Chaco in the gas fields, not far from Bolivia. The immediate purpose of the troops is ostensibly to support Paraguay and fight terrorism in the triple frontier. But it seems the real reason is the gas and oil in Bolivia, and probably the gas in the Chaco. It seems that the lies and bullying are incredibly brazen. Of course, the US is starting to worry a little about Brazil, and would like a base a little closer to them as well, I suspect.

Bolivia has unrest because the people want to nationalize the gas and oil, the energy companies want to steal it. It seems that the energy interests are trying to foment a secessionist movement to separate the provinces with the oil and gas, if necessary. If that happens, there will be massive unrest, possibly civil war. The US, with a base in the area, will obviously support the interests of the energy companies and help them steal the oil and gas. Always talking about the "rule of law" at the same time, of course. Interestingly, the same sort of situation could develop with the gas in Paraguay, with an attempt to split the gas containing Chaco from Paraguay. There are few people up there, and the energy companies will probably soon control the area if the gas looks viable. We could have unrest again in Paraguay as well.

This situation is developing now, so stay tuned. As this develops, we could see Americans become even more unwelcome in Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay. And Argentina could become very upset with the US as well.

Read NewAmericanCentury. Org. This is a 98 page manifesto written in the late 1990's but a bunch of Necons on how the US should develop a military base in the Middle East to protect our oil interests, develop a base in South America and increase our military influence in Asia.

It also advocated bankrupting the country as an excuse to force the elimination of Medicare, Social Security, welfare and all other 'government' programs (aren't the military and corporate welfare government programs?

7 of the authors were subsequently placed in the Bush administration-the most notible, Paul Wolfewitz (spelling? And based on currently trends, most, if not all, of those recommendations by the authors is exactly what is happening now.

However, Republicans don't want to know the truth. Consider the 200 billion Bush has said we may have to pay for New Orleans. Bush says fuck raising taxes or even eliminating the tax cuts on the rich. Just increase the debt more. Another push toward bankrupting this country and possbily destroying more lives than the Great Depression ever did.

I thought it was the Republicans that were fiscal conservatives.

When Reagan took office the debt was only around 500 billion-manageable. This was a debt created over 35 years. 8 years later after he left it was over 4 trillion. When Bush 2 took office we had a forecasted trillion dollar surplus. We are now projected to have a debt of close to 7-8 trillion in 10 years.

Sorry, I should blind some people with facts.

"When Reagan took office the debt was only around 500 billion-manageable. This was a debt created over 35 years. 8 years later after he left it was over 4 trillion."

1) Presidents do not make budgets nor appropriate money. Congress does. What party held the Senate and Congress during the Reagan years?

2) Reagan tax cuts resulted in a near doubling of IRS revenues in 8 Years.

3) The democratically held house / senate traded Reagans desire to rebuild our military (remember the Carter fiasco?) And accordingly appropriated funds, for their spending spree on social issues and other pork.

4) Did the trade pay off? Well we went from 22% interest rates to near 5% and had the biggest economic recovery in our history. We also gained respect militarily and quickend the end of the Soviet Empire.

Isn't it nice not to have discussions of pending nuclear destruction and global destruction? Of course we could have been nice and made friends with the soviets like the libs wanted and dismantled our weapons while allowing them to keep theirs a show of good faith). 1982 $632,240,506

1989 $1,013,322,133 Leaving office.

I keep trying to show this situation in a light more germane to my interests and those of this forum. Why can't you guys learn? In the US, pussy IS politics. That is why we call it sex prison. It is the biggest, strongest issue in the country. Those people in the Midwest and south who got hammered by Katrina were capable of generating a lot of attention and action to make sure we never see another tit on national TV after the Super Bowl, but little on hurricane protection. They know their priorities. I hope they are happy with the result.

For me, especially as regards pussy, this is about extremist suppression versus freedom and tolerance.

What I can never understand is what the people who support the extreme right get out of it. Presumably, one does the things one does because one gets something in return for doing them. But these people generally create miserable lives for themselves.

Moore's comment of 9-15-05: "He basically said that liberals were people who couldn't relax or sleep at night because they were too worried that someone, somewhere, might be having a good time." was stolen by Bush.

Sorry Moore, I first heard that statement at least 30 years ago, in this form: "A pilgrim is a person who lives in mortal terror that someone, somewhere, is having a good time.". In this form it is correct. The pilgrim ethic worships hardship and misery in life. The religious extremists still worship this ethic. They constantly talk of "the narrow, difficult path of righteousness", as opposed to the "broad, easy path of sin". The Republicans force themselves to outwardly conform to this ethic to maintain the support of the extremists. The sickest thing to me is that their concept of the "narrow, difficult" primarily applies only to sex in its various aspects. They have no problems with lying, cheating, extortion, stealing, murder. They can rationalize anything but sex.

Consider the ridiculous situation of Bill Gates. Here is a man who is worth $40 billion, has thousands of employees dependent on him, and some would say is responsible for a big chunk of the US economy. But he cannot:

1. Assume legal responsibility for 1 child, even his own. In any dispute with Melinda, he loses his children. It would be extremely difficult to have a child legally his own by any means.

2. Get laid or do much of anything else entertaining without begging Melinda. If he pisses her off, he loses the kids. He is in this regard practically her slave.

3. Get his load off in any legal or practical way when he wants to, without hiding somewhere in his house and jacking off. He can't even leave the country easily.

So what does he get for his $40 Billion? Not much. He generally lives a boring, miserable life. His 40,000 sq. Ft. House doesn't mean shit. I lived in a 4BR, etc. House alone for 22 yrs. Its nice when you want to take a walk at night inside. I would not consider trading places with him, because I would have to give up the opportunity to pursue these gorgeous women.

Do these executives and politicos support men's rights? Or freedom of belief, thought, and non destructive action? Or this forum and what it stands for? No. They, in their "ruthless greed" support policies that destroy the lives of millions to provide the opportunity to acquire more, but the "more" does not benefit them. This has to be the most twisted, deviate attitude imaginable, because I cannot believe that most of them actually have the beliefs of the extremists. They have a policy of acquisition solely for the sake of acquisition. The party of the religious extremists is the republicans, but nearly all male executives and politicos kowtow to them.

Then all of you people who support extremism, why? I understand that politics makes strange bedfellows, but trust me: If these people get in control they will make things worse that will not be corrected in your lifetime.

The other form of extremism regarding pussy is what scares me about the democrats now. In order to buy their silence and save his job, Clinton sold the party to the feminists. And they are the other side of the vice that we find ourselves in. So it is impossible to unquestioningly support the democrats. The biggest issues saving us are abortion, birth control, and gay rights. The straight feminists want abortion and the lesbian feminists want to get married. The religious extremists hate both. This keeps the women from fully aligning with their historical partner, the church. They have to give lip service to all rights in order to obtain the rights that they want. But watch out. After gay marriage is accepted, the women will find a reason why it is okay for women but not for men, and try to create laws against gay male marriage.

On feminist extremism, I mentioned the idea of a law preventing contractual sex for Americans all over the world. This is probably the greatest immediate danger we face. There is a concerted campaign, especially among UN groups, to generate hysteria about prostitution. Mostly it is now in the form of report after report filled with outrageous lies and statistics about forced prostitution, trafficking internationally in women, and so on. These reports are dutifully reported by the press, without challenge. Later, the feminists will quote these reports in further pushes for action. This technique was extremely effective in creating worldwide hysteria about kidnapping and international trafficking in children, a problem that never existed to any extent. But feminists were able to gain a lot of attention and power over the issue. Every time you see mention of "sex tourism" you can believe that the idea behind it is a law against contracting prostitutes worldwide. And yes, you can just break it, but the problem is you become extortion bait.

That is why I tend to agree with the "Libertarian" idea. But we as mongers need to fight the real problems facing us, and learn the issues about them.

Trust me, At a certain point in the 8 year reign of terror (Clinton) I developed a WTF attitude and let it go. Afterall, we can only vote once!

And just to clarify: I am not enamored with Bush. In fact, I think he has squandered a golden opportunity for conservatives. I also am furious at his propensity to pander to the fucking Mexicans that seem to believe that they
have a right to violate US immigration laws at will, murder, kidnap, smuggle contraband and drain social resources from tax payers. If we need the cheap labor (and we do) then we should document them and allow workers to come across in a legal and accountable way.

But here is the dig: Neither party wants to piss off the hispanic vote. So the madness continues.

Oh by the way, that southern border doesnt discriminate, any nationality including middle eastern terrorist can cross it. In fact large numbers of Brazilians are now crossing. Word is out down in S. "That is why I tend to agree with the "Libertarian" idea. But we as mongers need to fight the real problems facing us, and learn the issues about them."

Yes, I agree in part with this. I can really identify with a lot of libertarinism but not all of it. Our constitution was written with personal liberties as a central theme. Certainly large centralized government was not what our forefathers intened. That is the biggest problem I have with Dems (libs), I do not want cradle to grave government responsibility for me. What I do want is for our constitution to be upheld as written and respected by government and for law not to be subverted by activist judges who seek to overturn the will of the people, or correct the inablility of liberals to win elections and influence ideas in a public arena. I do not want social engineering. I do not want any restrictions on media, such the attempt to silence conservative talk radio (or any radio for that matter - even Air America). I do not want third world nations in the UN dictating either foreign or domestic US policy. I do not want us to be dependant on middle eastern oil (ok dems. Finally you see we gotta explore in Alaska and other places in the US) And I do not want radical agenda driven organizations like Greenpeace and the Sierra Club to determine how best to use natural resources (and yes I like nature, hiking, fishing etc.) with their anti buiness, anti capitalist motives.

However, I do want personal responsibility for all. I do want tax code reduced or eliminated. I do want to make it easier for small businesses to flourish. I do want to keep our military strong. And I do want to ensure that we remain free (to the extent as we know it - there is no such thing as total freedom) and have the backbone to defend it if neccessary.

And last but not least. I want all of us to be able to continue to freely discuss our views without regard for censorship, undue criticism or without losing respect for diverging opinions.

Afterall, we all have that right and that makes us unique in the world.
Despite all the flaws, where does everyone want to immigrate to? Where else is better to start with nothing? Where else can such quality of life be found
in concert with a large multi-cultural population? Where esle has the opportunity that we have? Answer: Nowhere. We simply are the best and must continue to get better. That, is the American way.

The US Navy today announced that it has released a senior Al Quaida terrorist after questioning him extensively for 27 days while being held prisoner aboard a US aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea.

In a humanitarian gesture, the terrorist was given $50 US and a white 1962 Ford Fairlane automobile upon being released from custody.

The people that are ruining this country are the NeoCons, Christian Religious Jihadists (they are not the same, the NeoCons are using the predjudist of the other to stay in power) and the looney fucking Democrats (we are all NOT like that, I for one am very hard working and the only check I ever got that I didn't work for was unemployment which is not payed for by the State but by the company)

I think the differences between Republicans and Democrates help this country stay on an even keel. I'v been tired for years of freeloaders running up my tax bill. The problem now is we have more corporate welfare and less individual welfare not less welfare. I think the corporate kind will cost me more than the other.

I have no problem with, and tremendous respect for moderate conservatives as I would hope a moderate conservative has respect for my moderate liberalism. We need more folks like this having dialogue, it's time to take our country back from the kooks on both sides of the aisle.

Daddy, unemployment is a program administered jointly by the states and the federal government, and is financed by a tax paid only by the employer in most states. However, the states do indeed receive federal money, mostly notably when the unemployment rate in a particular state rises above a certain threshold. That triggers extended benefits and these are federally financed. The federal unemployment tax is I believe 6.0% of wages, but that gets reduced by a credit the employer receives for state unemployment tax contributions.

"Set an honest and honorable example, just as I did," Washington advises, then fades away.

The next night, Bush is astir again and sees the ghost of Thomas Jefferson moving through the darkened bedroom. Bush calls out, "Tom, please! What is the best thing I can do to help the country?"

"Respect the Constitution, as I did," Jefferson advises and dims from sight.

The third night sleep is still not in the cards for Bush. He awakens to see the ghost of FDR hovering over his bed. Bush whispers, "Franklin, what is the best thing I can do for the country?"

"Help the less fortunate, just as I did, FDR replies, then fades into the mist.

Bush isn't sleeping well on the fourth night when he sees another figure moving in the shadows. It is the ghost of Abraham Lincoln. Bush pleads, " Abe, what is the best thing I can do right now to help the country?"

Lincoln replies, "Go see a play."

So what if he wanted to rule the Arab world? Big deal. When he was fighting Iran he was such a good friend of ours. Then all of a sudden not so much.

How is the world safer without him? Turns out he did not have any WMDs. The whole pretext for going to war was a blatant lie. Like pretty much everything this administration says. Perhaps you could try getting your info not only from Fox News and other Bush-approved sources.

When George Bush had the chance to fight in war (Vietnam) he got someone to enroll him in pilot school (which he was unqualified for) and never completed it. And, Mr. Cheney got deferments based on his medical condition (anal splint) or ingrown butt hair! I'm not lying either.

There was an article today in the NY Post (reprinted in a Bay Area paper) discussing the new vaccine that prevents women from getting the human papillomavirus (HPV) virus (a sexually transmitted disease). HPV in women is extremely dangerous with a high percentage of the women getting cervical cancer from HPV. Cervical cancer is the most dangerous and fast attacking form of cancer for women.

The vaccine is "virtually 100% effective for the 2 most common cancer-causing HPV strains".

The article went on to explain that many Republicans are against making the vaccine mandatory and giving it to all girls as during their High School years (from pressure from the religious right) because to do so would be giving tacit approval for premarital sex or adultry.

So let me understand this logic from Republicans and Christians, these are people who, if they actually followed their religious teachings would embrace the poor, the downtrodden, to forgive those hurt others, and want to help all people.

Do not give the vaccine to women because it promotes premarital sex and adultry. Rather, do not give them the protection they need, instead, let them get cancer and die.

Instead, they want to continue to preach what they have so far, with resounding success: follow the fantasy belief that humans will abstain from sexual activity except in a marriage situation.

What a loving, Christian position to hold!

I guess if there were an actual cancer that only inflicted corporations, THEN the Republicans would embrace their religious teachings and literally sacrifice themselves and die in their attempts to save the corporations from that cancer.

Stowe

You can have them burned off assuming you can see them and know they are there. Many women get them on their cervix and thus can not see them. If they do not go for their annual PAP test then there doctor will not know they are there either. There are several strains of HPV that cause cervical cancer, some more agressive than others.

Hopefully this kind of crap will wake up the American people to what assholes the Christian right are. How could someone deny anyone a vaccine that will prevent cancer? Especially a group that is "god loving". I hope they all get cancer or better yet, I hope their daughter's, who practice thier rightous crap get the cancer so that they can experience the terrible price of their beliefs. At the expense of getting blistered by many mongers (and maybe rightfully so) I am posting below a review of Kevin Phillips' new book. Phillips is a long time republican strategist and commentator. For my money he hits the proverbial nail on the head. This is a lengthy post for this board. Jackson, if this is overly lengthy, my feelings won't be hurt if you deep six it.

Featured Author: Kevin Phillips.

Reviews of Phillips' books, including "The Emerging Republican Majority" (1969) "Wealth and Democracy" (2002) and others.

AMERICAN THEOCRACY The Peril and Politics of Radical Religion, Oil, and Borrowed Money in the 21st Century.

By Kevin Phillips.

462 pp. Viking. $26.95.

Four decades ago, Kevin Phillips, a young political strategist for the Republican Party, began work on what became a remarkable book. In writing "The Emerging Republican Majority" (published in 1969) he asked a very big question about American politics: How would the demographic and economic changes of postwar America shape the long-term future of the two major parties? His answer, startling at the time but now largely unquestioned, is that the movement of people and resources from the old Northern industrial states into the South and the West (an area he enduringly labeled the "Sun Belt") would produce a new and more conservative Republican majority that would dominate American politics for decades. Phillips viewed the changes he predicted with optimism. A stronger Republican Party, he believed, would restore stability and order to a society experiencing disorienting and at times violent change. Shortly before publishing his book, he joined the Nixon administration to help advance the changes he had foreseen.

Phillips has remained a prolific and important political commentator in the decades since, but he long ago abandoned his enthusiasm for the Republican coalition he helped to build. His latest book (his 13th) looks broadly and historically at the political world the conservative coalition has painstakingly constructed over the last several decades. No longer does he see Republican government as a source of stability and order. Instead, he presents a nightmarish vision of ideological extremism, catastrophic fiscal irresponsibility, rampant greed and dangerous shortsightedness. (His final chapter is entitled "The Erring Republican Majority.") In an era of best-selling jeremiads on both sides of the political divide, "American Theocracy" may be the most alarming analysis of where we are and where we may be going to have appeared in many years. It is not without polemic, but unlike many of the more glib and strident political commentaries of recent years, it is extensively researched and for the most part frighteningly.

Persuasive.

Although Phillips is scathingly critical of what he considers the dangerous policies of the Bush administration, he does not spend much time examining the ideas and behavior of the president and his advisers. Instead, he identifies three broad and related trends — none of them new to the Bush years but all of them, he believes, exacerbated by this administration's policies — that together threaten the future of the United States and the world. One is the role of oil in defining and, as Phillips sees it, distorting American foreign and domestic policy. The second is the ominous intrusion of radical Christianity into politics and government. And the third is the astonishing levels of debt — current and prospective — that both the government and the American people have been heedlessly accumulating. If there is a single, if implicit, theme running through the three linked essays that form this book, it is the failure of leaders to look beyond their own and the country's immediate ambitions and desires so as.

To plan prudently for a darkening future.

The American press in the first days of the Iraq war reported extensively on the Pentagon's failure to post American troops in front of the National Museum in Baghdad, which, as a result, was looted of many of its great archaeological treasures. Less widely reported, but to Phillips far more meaningful, was the immediate posting of troops around the Iraqi Oil Ministry, which held the maps and charts that were the key to effective oil production. Phillips fully supports an explanation of the Iraq war that the Bush administration dismisses as conspiracy theory — that its principal purpose was to secure vast oil reserves that would enable the United States to control production and to lower prices. ("Think of Iraq as a military base with a very large oil reserve underneath," an oil analyst said a couple of years ago. "You can't ask for better than that.") Terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, tyranny, democracy and other public rationales were, Phillips says, simply ruses to disguise the real motivation for the.

Invasion.

And while this argument may be somewhat too simplistic to explain the complicated mix of motives behind the war, it is hard to dismiss Phillips's larger argument: that the pursuit of oil has for at least 30 years been one of the defining elements of American policy in the world; and that the Bush administration — unusually dominated by oilmen — has taken what the president deplored recently as the nation's addiction to oil to new and terrifying levels. The United States has embraced a kind of "petro-imperialism," Phillips writes, "the key aspect of which is the you. S. Military's transformation into a global oil-protection force," and which "puts up a democratic facade, emphasizes freedom of the seas (or pipeline routes) and seeks to secure, protect, drill and ship oil, not administer everyday affairs."

Phillips is especially passionate in his discussion of the second great force that he sees shaping contemporary American life — radical Christianity and its growing intrusion into government and politics. The political rise of evangelical Christian groups is hardly a secret to most Americans after the 2004 election, but Phillips brings together an enormous range of information from scholars and journalists and presents a remarkably comprehensive and chilling picture of the goals and achievements of the religious right.

He points in particular to the Southern Baptist Convention, once a scorned seceding minority of the American Baptist Church but now so large that it dominates not just Baptism itself but American Protestantism generally. The Southern Baptist Convention does not speak with one voice, but almost all of its voices, Phillips argues, are to one degree or another highly conservative. On the far right is a still obscure but, Phillips says, rapidly growing group of "Christian Reconstructionists" who believe in a "Taliban-like" reversal of women's rights, who describe the separation of church and state as a "myth" and who call openly for a theocratic government shaped by Christian doctrine. A much larger group of Protestants, perhaps as many as a third of the population, claims to believe in the supposed biblical prophecies of an imminent "rapture" — the return of Jesus to the world and the elevation of believers to heaven.

Prophetic Christians, Phillips writes, often shape their view of politics and the world around signs that charlatan biblical scholars have identified as predictors of the apocalypse — among them a war in Iraq, the Jewish settlement of the whole of biblical Israel, even the rise of terrorism. He convincingly demonstrates that the Bush administration has calculatedly reached out to such believers and encouraged them to see the president's policies as a response to pre-millennialist thought. He also suggests that the president and other members of his administration may actually believe these things themselves, that religious belief is the basis of policy, not just a tactic for selling it to the public. Phillips's evidence for this disturbing claim is significant, but not conclusive.

THE third great impending crisis that Phillips identifies is also, perhaps, the best known — the astonishing rise of debt as the precarious underpinning of the American economy. He is not, of course, the only observer who has noted the dangers of indebtedness. The New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, for example, frequently writes about the looming catastrophe. So do many more-conservative economists, who point especially to future debt — particularly the enormous obligation, which Phillips estimates at between $30 trillion and $40 trillion, that Social Security and health care demands will create in the coming decades. The most familiar debt is that of the United States government, fueled by soaring federal budget deficits that have continued (with a brief pause in the late 1990's) for more than two decades. But the national debt — currently over $8 trillion — is only the tip of the iceberg. There has also been an explosion of corporate debt, state and local bonded debt, international debt through huge trade imbalances, and consumer debt (mostly in the form of credit-card balances and aggressively marketed home-mortgage packages) Taken together, this present and future debt may exceed $70 trillion.

The creation of a national-debt culture, Phillips argues, although exacerbated by the policies of the Bush administration, has been the work of many people over many decades — among them Alan Greenspan, who, he acidly notes, blithely and irresponsibly ignored the rising debt to avoid pricking the stock-market bubble it helped produce. It is most of all a product of the "financialization" of the American economy — the turn away from manufacturing and toward an economy based on moving and managing money, a trend encouraged, Phillips argues persuasively, by the preoccupation with oil and (somewhat less persuasively) with evangelical belief in the imminent rapture, which makes planning for the future unnecessary.

There is little in "American Theocracy" that is wholly original to Phillips, as he frankly admits by his frequent reference to the work of other writers and scholars. What makes this book powerful in spite of the familiarity of many of its arguments is his rare gift for looking broadly and structurally at social and political change. By describing a series of major transformations, by demonstrating the relationships among them and by discussing them with passionate restraint, Phillips has created a harrowing picture of national danger that no American reader will welcome, but that none should ignore.

The evidence of government collusion in 9/11 is overwhelmingly conclusive as it was in 1989 when the terrorists of the first WTC attack produced tape recorded conversations with their CIA handlers.

People unwilling to examine the evidence should at least look at the absurd reactions of the US government to the threat of terrorism. Like the Patriot Act turning every domestic crime into an act of terrorism or implementing draconian airport security measures while leaving the Mexican border virtually unchallenged.

There are many voices more credible than Sheen exposing truth but morons tend to observe the famous and the biggest morons listen not to anything at all.

I'll put some stuff together for you but I doubt it will do any good for the aforesaid reasons.

Ok here's a little teaser.

Consider that no airplane debries was found at the Pentagon impact site, not even a single piece of airplane shrapnel. The official report was that the plane had completely disintegrated on impact, something which has never happened before in all of aviation history.

Planes have slammed into the side of mountains at even higher speeds and burst into flames, but never has a single such incident ever failed to produce a mountain of debries readily discernable as originating from the wreckage of an airplane. Consider that the hole at the Pentagon had no marks whatsoever showing the impact of the aircraft's wings.

These are just of the most tame and staggeringly obvious facts that should already raise a mountain of scepticism about the official version of events.

Mongers-

Clearly Goblin is way off in his constant rambling about vast conspiracy theories, however, I think he is correct in believing that the US government is complicit or at least negligent in many of the unfortunate events that have occurred in recent times. "For every action, there is an equal re-action". The September 11 attacks happened- several thousand people died, the vast majority "innocent" people. However, from the view of the Arabic men that took part in the attacks, these people were no more "innocent" than the thousands of Iraqi children who had died as a result of US "no fly zone" airstrikes or the US embargo on Iraq that caused the starvation and suffering of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children. Or, were those killed in 9/11 any more "innocent" than the countless numbers of Palestinians who have been killed by Israelis during the years of occupation? The 9/11 attackers undoubtedly viewed their actions as an act of war, and in times of war, "innocents" die and that is the way it is.

Keep in mind that I am from the NYC sphere, I know several people with friends and other relatives who died in the attacks, and I saw the destruction firsthand. However, sometimes the "hens come home to roost" and in this case the "blowback" to the US foreign policy came in the form of jumbo jets flying into our buildings. War is Hell, that is a fact, but keep in mind that we are all humans and that Iraqis and Palestinans feel the same grief for their fallen loved ones that Americans do.

Well I find your self aggrandizing, self righteous, and of course deluded position rather amusing. You never fail in that department.

Firstly, if I was in Argentina, which by know you should know I am not, I would have no hesitation whatsoever about a face to face meeting to correct you and your irrational nonsense and to watch you scurry away in shame red faced and teary eyed but hopefully slightly less confused than you are right now.

Secondly, the loss to the victims of 9/11 is greatly aggravated by our own governments involvement in this attack and it is they who should be most outraged by this and by people like you who try to deny the obvious and parrot propaganda mantras in light of the devastatingly monumentally huge mountain of evidence proving conclusively collusion by the US government in the 9/11 attack.

Thirdly, the many victims of 9/11, whose interests you pretend to represent with your wrong opinions are suing the federal government in US courts right now making the same conspiratorial accusations you like to rail against.

Fourthly, I have nothing to say to the people in the middle east because the US government is the enemy of American people and not a bunch of Allah screaming confused brown skins who couldn't fly a kite into the New York trade centre if Mohammad's resurrection depended on it.

Anyone who is incapable of understanding such things can also not be expected to recognize how the people you knew in high school, and the firemen you new that lost their buddies, or what your brother does in his spare time has absolutely nothing to do with the assignment of blame for the attack.

Thomaso, I knew you were a lost cause after my first encounter with you and to be truthful my opinion of you has not changed.

Yours, I suppose, is the logic and the self righteousness one should expect from a pleasure seeking pervert.

Thomaso; I knew you were a lost cause after my first encounter with you and to be truthful my opinion of you has not changed.

Yours I suppose is the logic and the self righteousness one should expect from a pleasure seeking pervert.

So be careful what you wish for because you might get it, you would never be able to show your face at Alamo's again. You should know by now that I have no problems dealing with confrontation or with voicing opinions contrary to the majority and I have certainly never had a problem dealing with the likes of you.

Oh as long as I'm posting anonymously you say? Believe me, my friends would tell you otherwise.

Goblin.Goblin,

I would firstly like to tell you I am from England and we don't obviously receive as much news as in America about 9/11.

I have read your posts with interest but I still don't see what the conspiracy is.

Is it possible for you to put in laymen's terms what you believe was the true facts of 9/11.

I ask this with sincerity.

The Ex-Nut has really convinced me that you men are correct. I engaged him in a long conversation. Now, I believe he is a genius! I presented your proof to him. He believes it was done by Pedofhiles. It was an inside job. Exlosives detonated in the buildings. An effort to destroy our economic system. Pentagon was compiling secret pedophile files that they destroyed. The airplanes didn't exist. The airplane crash in PA was not related. The purpose of the explosions was to cause economic chaos. They could continue their sexual practices without goverment interference. Financing provided by the Catholic Church and The National Gay Alliance. Many thanks to the 3 of you for alerting me. Now, I feel a little closure on the death of a very good friend. You should be ashamed of yourself for making fun of and trying to deny what killed your so called very good friend. If this is how you treat your friends I would hate to be your enemy. I don't know if it is possible for someone like you to have any friends.

Popular Mechanics has a receptive road rash trailer trash audience ready to accept all kinds of superficial and conjecturous propaganda nonsense.

On the other hand, I would expect a whoremongering maniac to flock to publications like Hustler or Penthouse in search for the truth instead of some car nut magazine.

Pedophiles? Why would you bring them into the conspiracy? Now if the buildings were full of pedophiles I would be okay with that. Sick, twisted pieces of crap who do not deserve to live. How do you feel about them? Surely you agree they do not deserve a place in any society. Predators and scum all. There is no treatment for these sick SOB's, jail for life or death penalty.

FHFlexible.

Without also providing you with evidentiary backup the facts of government involvement will seem too fantastic to even the most open minded. It is difficult to believe that the truth is such a drastic departure from the official version crammed down our throats by the media conglomerates.

When you see Bush waving the American flag at funerals and memorial services for his own victims then it becomes difficult to conceive that such wretchedness is possible. But an administration that poisons its own troops as in Dessert Storm with depleted uranium rounds etc and sends them home brain damage and otherwise disabled is really capable of anything.

The only way to educate yourself is to buy a variety of books from sources that are unfortunately being discredited by those in collusion with special interests who have something to gain from these disasters. www.inforwars.com. I have found him to be among the more credible researchers although he is a bit crass especially for the European pallet he also does exaggerate a bit and sometimes and takes things slightly out of context. On purpose or to amplify his point, I’m not sure. However, in comparison to the manufacturings of the mainstream it is absolute truth.

The most recent terrorist events against the US have all been sponsored, organized, and orchestrated by elements within the US intelligence community. These include the Oklahoma event, the attack against the US Cole, the embassy attacks, the first attack against the WTC in 1989 and of course the event of 9/11. Publications are readily available; they contain verifiable and irrefutable evidence.

The agenda is political control over America, if you are willing to do some reading on the subject we will have something to discuss. www.infowars.com

Goblin, if I were to believe your theories about AA flight 77. Could you answer just one question? What happened to the people on flight 77?Well first of all there weren't any Arabs listed as passengers on flight 77. Check here for an official passenger list published by CNN.

www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2001/trade.center/victims/AA77.victims.html

So the official story is that the five Arabs who were reported to have flown flight 77 into the Pentagon crawled in unnoticed. What a farce that is.
Here is a list published by the FBI of the guys that supposedly snuck on.

www.fbi.gov/pressrel/penttbom/aa77/77.htm

The supposed highjakers of the other terror flights were on the passenger manifest.

Here we have a report on the Barbara Olson phone call line of bullshit.
www.vialls.com/lies911/lies.htm

The most likely explanation is that Flight 77, having missed the window of opportunity to launch its intended attack, was shot down in some unpopulated area along the Ohio / Kentucky border. The only shred of evidence that Flight 77 ever made it any further than that is an extremely dubious report from Bush Administration insider Theodore Olsen, who claimed that he was the recipient of an unlikely, and unrecorded, phone call from his wife, Bush Administration insider Susan Olsen, who happened to be, conveniently enough, an alleged passenger on the plane, and the only passenger, coincidentally, who was able to allegedly make a phone call, even though, according to Ted Olsen, who is the only witness to the alleged call, all the passengers were encouraged by the hijackers to phone home.

Fact is that no large airliner hit the Pentagon, the exact fate of flight 77 has not been verified from a vast range of possibilities.

Well, Gobbling, I will point out to you that before you criticize Thomaso's command of his native language, you should explore the difference between "palate" and "pallet," and learn to use a semi-colon. Also in your sentence "If it wasn't for prostitution losers like you would only ever be fucking their own assholes," it should be weren't.

This sentence also leaves a lot to be desired: "But an administration that poisons its own troops as in Dessert [sic; was it raining pastries?] Storm with depleted uranium rounds etc and sends them home brain damage [sic] and otherwise disabled is really capable of anything."

Plus you are too obtuse to realize that Hunt is parodying Nibu (you and Nibu can look that word up in any good dictionary).

Isn't see you enn tee a prohibited word? What happened to the great correcting software? And who let Nibu out of his jaula?

Remember, many Argentines believe that the reason that some wealthy Americans are buying ranches in Patagonia is due to a covert operation in which the USA will "steal the water" of Argentina. Of course these same wealthy Americans buy ranches in Montana, Aspen and New Mexico.

Yeah sure, the USA lacks fresh water and is right next door to Argentina so it would be so convenient to build a pipeline. What a joke. Good people down here, but very irrational. This silliness even wears off on people writing for BA Herald.

Dickhead
04-04-06, 19:32
Yeah, a pipeline wouldn't make sense but couldn't the US steal the water little by little by sending small packages of it via Federal Express? Or what if every time one of us went back to the states, we put rubber linings in our jacket pockets and filled them up with that nice pure water from the glaciers? Wouldn't that work?

Capt Dave
04-04-06, 19:43
Actually it might make even more sense to smuggle freeze-dried water which could be disguised as cocaine to get past customs!

Or, in a pinch, condoms full of water could be swallowed and then retrieved later.

Dickhead
04-04-06, 20:11
What about instant water? Dehydrate it into a powder and then later you could just add water and you'd have instant water.

Dickhead

Perhaps if legal prostitution had been available, THIS would not have happened:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12159118/

Or not. Maybe the guy is a total pedophile. In any event these are the type of people that the current "elected" (I put that in quotes since it achieved neither a majority nor even a simple plurality) right-wing government has chosen.

Gee, do you think a culture of sexual repression and denial of obvious physical needs might lead to a bunch of sickos like this? Just wondering.

Moore
04-05-06, 02:22
I theorize that this "culture of sexual repression" also makes men more driven to success. If you're happily getting laid all the time, you're less inclined to work since you already have what you need.

Regarding pedophiles, I dont have stats but whenever I see in the news that a kiddie-ring has been busted they seem to come from all countries including liberal ones like Netherlands.

I do theorize that that this repression contributes to our high incidence of "going postal" cases, though.

Dickhead
04-05-06, 02:50
Yes, I do agree that getting laid all the time does perhaps make one less ambitious and driven. Look at Caribbean cultures, for example.

Now my question becomes: if I am laying around in the tropics all day and getting pussy and not giving a fuck about anything, am I getting pussy because nobody gives a fuck about anything except pussy in the tropics, or does everyone in the tropics lay around not giving a fuck BECAUSE of all the pussy they are getting?

But Argentina has only about 5% of its land mass within the tropics and I have never been there and I suspect most other posters have not been to tropical Argentina either.

So then why is it that while I was once an ambitious white collar professional capitalist, I no longer really give a shit about anything except pussy and surviving economically enough to get more pussy?

Could it be that pussy is superior to monetary compensation?

Pussy will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no pussy?

I'm just not clear on this right now.

Rock Harders
04-05-06, 05:22
Dickhead-

There is no doubt that it is better to have no money and be able to score lots of pussy than to have all the money in the world and not be able to get laid. Take myself for example, I do not have any "real money", like I bet most of the older guys do (who are retired, or semi retired, and have saved hundreds of thousands or more dollars to live on) yet I am able to get better pussy (oftentimes) than money can buy, and thus I am extremely happy and carefree. I basically survive entirely "upon the kindness of others" (I. E. Successfull parents and relatives) and I couldn't give two shits about having a so-called "career", all I care about now is working out, eating, sleeping, and fucking the greatest number of beautiful women possible. I can honestly say that although I am far from a wealthy man, I have zero stress in my life and I am truly happy.

Personally I do not get too excited about politics because it is all the same. I have my own thoughts on our countrys security but all the other issues are just a matter of who to tax or who to give money to. But folks who are always demanding something be done do interest me.

What exactly is Nibu doing to correct all these problems? Donations to other political parties? Active in local, state or national issue groups? Organizing petitions and demonstrations for change? If he is taking a stand that's great, if not, why not?

Has anybody had any problems?Seems the problem was that the prescription was not in his name. Probably not a big issue, and apparently cleared up by his physician. His doc is probably doing him a favor by putting some "questionable" prescriptions in his own name (given Rush's history of major "fraud" in that area re: Oxycontin) I am not an expert in this field, but if your script for whatever is in your own name you should not have a problem. However if you are running around from one country to another with 10 bottles of Xanax, and none in your name, expect some issues.

Maybe Mpexy can add some info here. My bet is that Rush would not have had a problem without his legal history.

I only know the medical side of the law, not the don't-put-me in jail side of the law for the fine nuances.

But all possession, importation, distribution, and / or manufacture of drugs from big companies down to physicians to end patients in the United States fall under the Controlled Substances Act. In short, every drug has a category under which it falls - Schedule I to Schedule V to non-classified (which means you can pack 10 cases of the stuff and you're fine)

Schedule I - no one wants to be caught with these. These are drugs that might be legal elsewhere in the world, but the United States has decided a) it has no currently accepted medical treatment use, and be) too dangerous for use even under medical supervision. Doctors can never prescribe a Schedule I drug, and mere possession whether you have a script for it or not is going to get you in trouble with whatever specific penalty each state or federal law applies for that type of drug. This category includes addictive drugs like meth, DMT, heroin, LSD, and more dubiously political drugs like GHB and marajuana.

Schedule II - One step lower but still fairly serious drugs, and oddly enough cocaine falls here because technically under certain circumstances it can be used by prescription as a topical anaesthetic. Although usually in the derivative form of eucaine. All schedule II drugs are only available by prescription and every single dosage from manufacture to distribution is strictly controlled. Possession of them has to be in your name for that prescription. Possession of non-prescribed schedule II drugs can get you in trouble. Rush's OxyContin from a purely technical side was the big deal it was because techincally OxyContin is a Schedule II drug. I'm sure there was politics behind it which I don't want to get into, but it's a lot easier to make politics out of someone getting caught with a Schedule II drug than some Schedule IV drug.

Schedule III - same as schedule II for prescription only but lot less distribution controls. Ketamine, codeine, anabolic steroids, etc all fall under this category. Same for possession - prescription better be under your name or technically you could be charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substrance.

Schedule IV - this is the hollywood crowd drug supermarket - all your usual mild sedatives - Xanax, Valium, other benzos, Ambien, barbituates and other phenobarbitals, etc. They are all again prescription only, but there's little to zero distribution controls. However, possession is still by your name script only. I don't know how other states do it, but in California, while it's technically a violation of the CSA to possess a non-prescribed Schedule IV drug, I don't recall ever hearing someone getting charged much less busted for it. I suppose it's up to the DA or ADA deciding how free their calendar is or whether there is some politics behind it.

Schedule V - some by prescription only, some non-prescription like your cough suppressants, anticonvulsants, etc. Technically like above, but it would be surprising for the Feds or State to charge you with possession.

Schedule VI - this is not a fed control, but a state by state regulation. Non-drug items like inhalants (amyl nitrate or poppers) nitrous oxide, etc. Are controlled here by some states. Oregon went nuts awhile back and decided any over the counter cold medication with pseduoephedrine (think Nyquil) now needed to be by prescription only as a Schedule VI drug. The supposed rationale was that in Oregon there was / is apparently an army of drug lords using the pseudoephedrine in cold medications to help manufacture methamphetamine. I suppose these drug lords all don't have cars and can't just step over the border to Washington but oh well.

Non-classified - free for all.

For the Rush case that spurred this question - I have no idea why he was detained or even had his doctor have to vouch for him. Sildenafil or Viagra is not a controlled substance - it's prescription only to obtain them yes, and technically if they can prove purchase without prescription was made it's illegal, but it's not a Schedule classified drug. So while it may require a prescripton to obtain it, there's no control over possession. If he had been caught with Xanax which is a controlled substance, that would be one thing - but Viagra is a non-controlled prescription only drug. Physicans don't even need a special license to prescribe it like with most controlled substances so that it can be monitored - it just falls under the general script authority.

Some comments on Mpexy's post-and thanks for the info. I have never seen any evidence of LSD being addictive, and if there is "any" it is more bogus horseshit cooked up by the righteous right. Limbaugh's run in with the law was clearly not political. It may have ended up with alot of politics involved because of his notoriety, but he was HEAVILY involved in working multiple physicians for scripts of oxy and derivitives. I don't remember the details, but recall at the time being amazed at the extent of his involvement, addiction wise and with the expected legal ramifications. Those kinds of cases ARE prosecuted regularly, but with folks not as well known, and plea bargains are frequent. Yes, his case became a political football, but there were legit criminal offenses. In fact, he is probably lucky he was caught. It sounds like he was out of control and being out of control with Oxy is very dangerous. Ask any ER doc.

Mpexy
06-27-06, 23:58
I'm not going to become embroiled in a debate on LSD, whether of it's properties or political position on use. So this is my first and last reply on it.

Re-read my post, which I now regret even making. People just don't read and jump on whatever pet hobby horse they want to beat. First, it's not me saying one way or the other whether LSD is addicitive, I was stating what the CSA Schedule classification of drugs generally consider as the criteria to place drugs in that schedule level.

Generally, if a drug is considered of no medical use, highly abusive and / or addicitive, and / or too unsafe to use even under medical supervision, a drug is considered a Scheduled I controlled substance. However there are exceptions if you want to be specific and go down this road - take flunitrazepam or Rohypnol - it used to be a Schedule IV drug, got moved up to Schedule III, and now being processed for Schedule I. That's more political than medical for the classification of rohypnol as a Schedule I drug.

For exact criteria for why and / or how LSD got onto the schedule one list you'll have to ask the DEA and the Feds. Like I said, I was just stating the medical side of the law that physicians have to be aware of as part of prescribing controlled substances.

If you don't think LSD should be classified generally as addicitive, good for you. I'd say that's just believing what you want to believe. On the neurochemical side, you have some support to think that way if you only choose to interpret one facet of it. Specifically that LSD is rapidly absorbed and after repeated use will have lesser and lesser effect if continually used in most individuals, and there has been little to no linkage to neurochemical reliance or compulsive behaviour association similar to cocaine, nicotine, etc. After halting use for some days, the hallucinogenic mental state can be usually felt again. So you can choose to interpret this as a non-chemical reliance and no real physical addition state.

Personally, I'd consider that foolish. Entire drug rehab call centers and hospital staff that see LSD "addicts" who are strongly addicted psychologically to the desired mental effects of LSD would disagree. Myself included. Whether you are hooked physically or psychologically to the effects of the drug is just as much an addiction in my mind as the actual neurochemical reliance on the drug iteself.

Either way though, it's in the end irrelevant - LSD is a Schedule I controlled substance and considered addicitve by the United States. Go howl at the Feds if you disagree, I'm just relaying what it's classification is vis a vis the schedule level.

Sorry you felt blindsided about the LSD thing. That certainly was not my intent. You are in the unfortunate position of having alot of knowledge about issues that can stir up debate. And yes, LSD as addictive is an interest of mine. My comments were certainly not personal in nature as regards LSD, Limbaugh or anything else. Thanks for the input.

I'll confess that I MAY have overstepped with the inference that Rush is a religious nut, but the bigot issue seems pretty clear. His thinly veiled racist statements about Donovan McNabb a few years back were enough evidence for me. AND, if he is not a racist, those kinds of statements indicate something even worse-a pandering to his racist listeners. I will say that Rush is old news, and not a strawman anymore for many. That said, "celebs" on either side of the political fence will be skewered from time to time for their indiscretions. Whether they are the Rushes of the world, or the Kennedys.;)

Obviously us here in Europe watched the devastation of hurricane Katrina on our news channels.

Today in our papers is a picture of 10,000 (yes ten thousand) mobile homes laying empty in an airfield in Arkansas. Each new one costing £18,000.00 and £125,000.00 a month to store them.

Also stated is that 335 individuals have been filed with criminal charges.

Out of this terrible tragedy some people are making lots of money. Why and how?

At some point in the distant future that may, indeed, be the case. After all, America probably will not maintain its military/economic/political supremacy forever. But from a near-term point of view -- i.e., the rest of our natural lives -- I don't see that happening. Doggboy is right, the dollar is Fucked.

This is one of the reason's that both Gold & Oil have risen in price, both sold in dollars.

The only thing that could save the dollar would be a rise in intetrest rates which would trash our economy and would be only a short term fix.

The United States can not compete in the internation market place on any idem that is labor intensive. Hense, the third world economies, China, India and the like are becoming the driving engines of world commerce.

Remember Ross Perot and his famious line "That Sucking Sound" as jobs head for Mexico.

Well now your seeing it on a world wide basis with both jobs a capital fleeing the country searching for more competitive markets, looking for a better return.

I don't believe for one nanosecond that the US economy is going to collapse. Too many fools have been making this prediction since the 1970s, and I had listened to them, I would be living with nothing more than a coffee can full of gold coins buried in the backyard of my rented apartment.

The dollar goes up, and the dollar goes down. It runs in cycles, like in any free economy. In the 70s it was way down. In the 80s it was way up. In the early 90s it was way down again. In the late 90s it was higher than ever. Now it's cycled back down again. Big fucking deal.

If you want to go about this the right way, the lesson is to be diversified in your assets. I personally have 30% of my stock portfolio in a broadly diversified basket of international stocks. If the dollar goes down, I make even more money. If it doesn't, the cycles will even out, and I will make still more money.

Or you can listen to the latest generation of fools predicting economic armageddon. If anybody wants some old books from Howard Ruff, forecasting disaster, published in the 1970s, I can send them to you and you can save yourself the money you'd spend on the more current prophets of doom and gloom. I think I also have Ravi Batra's famous book, "The Great Depression of 1990." They all tell the same story, only in different years, and they're all bullshit.

Exon is right unfortunately, because it means the decline of this country.

How can any country have an $8 trillion debt and growing larger every year and have it's economy survive? Anyone who thinks a country in such debt is not in serious danger of collapse sometime in the next 30 years is ignoring basic economics and the obvious.

It is amazing how so many intelligent people always ignore the $8 trillion dollar debt as if it were nothing.

And with the jobs and technology moving to China and India ever faster, it can only get worse. If I remember correctly, for the first time ever, the US did not file for the most international patents for last year-that honor went to China.

And we have only ourselves to blame because the politicans and corporate execs only look to next quarter rather than to the next decade.

For every doomsday statistic cited -- e. G. 8 trillion dollar debt or whatever -- there is another statistic being completely overlooked.

As J. P. Morgan said about the stock market, "It will fluctuate." Same same about the dollar...the economy...etc.

Hunt, I agree with what you are saying, but I also think you got off the main point. I don't think anyone is saying the US isn't a safe investment at all, even though we have tons of unemployed, a huge deficit, corruption is getting worse, blah blah blah so on and so forth. The point is many people think that it isn't as solid as it used to be and for that reason, many people are advocating diversification. I personaly agree that it's not good to have " all your eggs in one basket ".

I don't think I would every liquidate all my US assets, but investing in up and coming economies is a very good thing, and just like the stock market, you need to know when to get in and when to get out. I agree the Euro is gaining on the dollar, I was just there and 5 years ago many people preffered to deal in dollars and keep their savings in dollars, these days people are switching to the Euro, do I think it's the smartest thing to do? Maybe, maybe not, but it is more common than you might think.

In Ukraine for instance all real estate transactions used to be done and priced in dollars, now it's starting to move towards the Euro. Alot of people around the world seem to think diversification is the best bet.

I would suggest that instead of " having one dirty little finger in one dirty little pie you should have all your dirty little fingers in all the dirty little pies".

BTW, that's a quote from the movie Lock, Stock and two smoking barrels, great movie:D.

Diversify abroad absolutely. You don't even need foreign corporations/funds in order to have substantial global exposure. Just owning Coca Cola might not be a bad idea.

I believe that during the 1970s and early 1980s many people thought the USA was doomed and definitely not as strong as it used to be. The economy was weak, there was stagflation and Carter, an energy crisis, Vietnam was recent, and everything produced abroad seemed superior to an American product.

Then the Reagan administration arrived and possibly the the strongest period of sustained economic growth in US history began. The information revolution arrived a bit later and the USA pioneered and led the charge as usual. We heard a lot less preaching about the imminent collapse of the US ecomony for about 20 years.

Whatever the next economic, industrial, or technical revolution is, it will almost surely be led by the USA using the last 150 years as a guide. That is because it is still the most entreprenurial, dynamic, developed, free market on the planet with no country poised to take its place in the forseeable future, regardless of the national debt.

I agree with alot of what you said Moore, but I have to say you overlooked two things, first being during the 1970' s, The US wasn't dealing with an economic powerhouse like China, India, or Energy giants like Russia. I could go on and on about the differences between now and then, but the point is things HAVE changed, and your predictions about the next technical, economic, industrial revolution being led by the US, is more of a maybe than a definite. I just read somewhere that for the first time in history China is overtaking the US in Patents, they are also publishing more research and scholarship, it's not a huge thing, but it is a sign that the future is not a given. There is a reason the US government and US corporations are knee deep in Asia. They can say anything they want for politically motivated talking points, but MOST people forsee that the new emerging economic powerhouse is Asia. Just three letters S. C. O, get used to them because in the future you will hear alot more about them.

I think All you have said about the US is true, but the point is to stay focused on growth and development and stop dumping all our money on the M. I. C, I really think Keynes was misinterpretted to the detriment of mankind. But maybe he predicted that also. It seems we are more interested in holding the biggest gun in the world and less on having the strongest economy or maybe we equate one with the other and THAT might be the problem. All the new economies have said time and time again that they prefer dealing with countries like China and Russia, because they don't like US strong arm tactics and lack of respect, and BEFORE, there wasn't a good strong alternative and now there is. The US CAN maintain it's position, but it will take the new generation to change and adapt to the new global economy. Just as history has taught all of us I hope, you either change and adapt or you become extinct, Just ask the Romans, the Ottomans, the U. K, the Soviet Union, so on and so forth. Let's be honest about one thing, The US hasn't always gotten ahead by it's inovation alone, I won't go into it but anyone who knows history, knows we had a " few helping hands ".

I agree with you that the past is always a little bit differnt from the future; analogies are just analogies, and at some point they break down and things actually are different and change occurs.

Nonetheless, in terms of economic powerhouses, the U. S. Had to deal with Japan, which was perceived to be a huge economic powerhouse way back when. Magazine covers were full of feature articles about the decline of America to a resurgent Japan. What happened?

And in terms of energy giants, the U. S. had to deal with a very strong (at the time) OPEC. And the naysayers and doomsday prognosticators were beside themselves with how this spelled the end of American economic dominance. What happened?

I think Moore is spot on in his assessment about America's more intangible assets, and their imlications on the economic future.

BadMan
11-27-06, 13:21
Yes AND no, for one thing, OPEC is one of the big reasons we are STILL paying 55-60 a barrel, so they are kicking our ass in those terms, and right now as we speak the US is falling over themselves to try to stop the NEW energy cartel being started by Russia and many other african and central asian countries with loads of natural resources, the US and Europe fear these energy cartels. That is the truth so I think the jury is still out on that one, as far as your Japan assesment, you are 100 % correct, BUT, and this is a big BUT, you continue to miss the point, we aren't in a 1970's economy anymore, we aren't dealing with countries we are dealing with blocks of nations with a limitless supply of energy, consumer populations, and so on. Japan could not sustain growth because in the end it is just a small island with very little natural and energy resources of it's own. It was only a matter of time. It was like saying we should fear Taiwan. They might have big money and big industry but there is a limit to what a small island with very few resources can achieve.

The SCO is something different, you have India, China, Russia, Kazhakstan, Iran and Possibly Pakistan in the near future agreeing to work together on trade, military, science, defense, research and development, energy trade and policy. This is NOT Japan. You will see a little more in the future as this will be gradual. But the poles are slowly shifting. We can overcome that, but we need to start thinking outside the box and leave the whole " manifest destiny " bit at the door because if we don't refrain from our arrogance we will learn our lessons the hard way.

Again I never said the US isn't solid, but for how long doesn't depend on us saying so, but on our actions around the world. Nothing is certain.

Badboy

It means that we're paying the same price for oil now as we did in 1984, and a third less than we did in 1979, when you adjust for inflation.

Oooh! Oooh! The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

And by the way, BB13, the energy supply is in fact limitless, and not just in the Middle East. If oil gets expensive enough, the US can process the oil shale in the western states into fuel. There is the equivalent of 1 trillion (that's trillion with a "t") barrels of oil sitting in shale in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah. Don't lose sleep worrying about the future. The only thing that one need fear is socialist economic policies which could strangle innovation, production, and investment.

For people who owned stocks in Germany, at two times in the last 90 years their holdings went to zero. At least once in Italy and Japan. The same was true in China. And was also true in various other countries, many times.

The Chinese banking system is utterly bankrupt, Papa Benito has hit this one right on the head. The banks are forced by the government to make worthless loans to state-owned or state-affiliated enterprises. These non-performing loans far exceed any prudent reserve standards (upwards of 50% of Chinese "bank" loans are non-performing). I recently read that there are at least 3000 ball bearing factories in China either recently built or under construction. How many of them do you really think the world needs? Or that are running at 80% capacity?

On the bright side, Citibank, Morgan Stanley, and other Western banks are being brought in to "invest" in the Chinese banks. We'll see how that goes.

Some of Warren's thoughts.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Public stances:

Buffett has repeatedly criticized the financial industry for what he considers to be a proliferation of advisors who add no value but are compensated based on the volume of business transactions which they facilitate. He has pointed to the growing volume of stock trades as evidence that an ever-greater proportion of investors' gains are going to brokers and other middle-men.

Buffett emphasized the non-productive aspect of gold in 1998 at Harvard: "It gets dug out of the ground in Africa, or someplace. Then we melt it down, dig another hole, bury it again and pay people to stand around guarding it. It has no utility. Anyone watching from Mars would be scratching their head."

Buffett believes that the U. S. Dollar will lose value in the long run. He views the United States' expanding trade deficit as an alarming trend that will devalue the U. S. Dollar and U. S. Assets. As a result it is putting a larger portion of ownership of U. S. Assets in the hands of foreigners. This induced Buffett to enter the foreign currency market for the first time in 2002. However, he substantially reduced his stake in 2005, as changing interest rates increased the costs of holding currency contracts. Buffett continues to be bearish on the dollar, and says he is looking to make acquisitions of companies which derive a substantial portion of their revenues from outside the United States.
