http://www.ectaco.ca/products/ECTACO-Travel-SpeechGuard-TLX-ES/..I'll be interested in your experience. I hope that you will share it with us. I don't think much of the online TEXT translation services. When the input is voice the result can only be worse.

I haven't had good result with optical character recognition software either. (But I have only tried the free stuff).

Please let us know.

If I sent a text msg to someone there I will have no problem, but if someone sends one to my USA Skype number will they have a problem with cost?

Thanks.

If I sent a text msg to someone there I will have no problem, but if someone sends one to my USA Skype number will they have a problem with cost?Cost is the least of your worries! The networks here are notoriously bad and lose A LOT of messages. Sending a message between different local networks is a pretty hit or miss affair.

Even to someone on the SAME network isn't exactly reliable. Messages from my friend who's on the same account on the same network can usually be relied upon to arrive, albeit sometimes an hour after they were sent.

I've never successfully received a message from abroad, although admittedly I stopped trying a few years ago.

The moral of the story - always call!

http://www.ectaco.ca/products/ECTACO-Travel-SpeechGuard-TLX-ES/..It's really UGLY but you can drop it in the Jacuzzi and it won't miss a beat!

The fact that your incoming calls are Free is no big deal down here unless someone tries to call you from a payphone. Not Sure.

The Translator should be useful unless the accents down here throw it off when a local speaks into your phone.

You can always sell the thing when your finished for $1000.00 dollars more than you paid for it if you don't like it.

TL.The antenna comes off so that should take some of the ugly out, laughs. I think I have lost 8 phones over the dock so maybe this thing can be rescued.

With my non existing spanish it should make for interesting conversations with the chicas as long as It don't insult them in the translations. I like the idea that it takes 2 sim cards.

What is the cost of data through Movistar on a pay as you go plan?

Lose the antenna for sure!

Dual Sims are a great idea because one number can be for the Chicas and the other number can be for your Mother!

I think it's about 1 Peso per day for Data with Movistar. Talking is about 4 pesos a minute or more. Nobody talks. Pure Text. At least the Chicas won't talk.

How much would it cost you for an "extra" piece of luggage? $200.00 dollars?

I have a Google Nexus phone. I added a Moviestar sim card and it was working for both voice and text but no data. Today I wake up and I am getting no signal. I take the phone to my phone guy on the corner of Callao and Cordoba where I bought the sim card. The phone guy takes the sim card out and puts it into another phone. We get a signal. The phone guy says that Moviestar is blocking my phone using the serial number and he can fix it for 350 P. Feeling like a fool but not knowing any other solution I agree and leave the phone for 6 hours. When I return signal is working and I am also getting data now which is better than before. Phone guy says if there is any problem just bring it back. I assume he will fix it for what I already paid.

I do not know what the problem was but maybe one of you tech guys can save someone some money in the future on the solution. Phone guy said he worked on it through using USB port on the computer.

Most likely your sim didn't register ... If they blocked your phone why would another sim work? Anyways. Recommend tmobile with their new international data roaming. No need for a sim.

Thanks for any information. I prefer to buy a sim / chip from a legit dealer with my passport, so I can get customer service from Personal if required.

Can I buy a sim at airport? Is there a legit dealer near Las Heras and Junin whereI will be staying. The large Personal store on Callao and Sante Fee is closed for a few years. If I require a new sim, I would like to buy a sim from personal so I know it will work and I can find out about data plans. I have enough spanish to do this with a bit of luck and patience.

Any suggestions: I am arriving December 25. I will try to put 10 pesos into the phone at the airport and wait to see if it works, then I need some help or suggestions. Most of the places in the airport will be closed. Most of the phone stores in Recoleta will likely be closed.

My preference is to stay in Recoleta to do this on the 25th is it is possible.

The easiest no hassle sim card is avbl at nuevo de julio estacion de subte, when you exit from line D and move on to Line "c" for Retiro estacion, their is a blind man selling chips for all three..claro, movie star, personal for 15 pesos each..all unmarked chips (if you want to be away from the prying eyes of the big brother), ready to work as soon as you put in yr phone. If you have a open iphone...just carry the special stapler / cutter from USA, meant to make the chip small and you wud be good to go.

For recharge, you have booths electronico en most of the kioskos where you choose service provider, enter your phone number and slip a 100 pesos bill and you are recharged.

Hope this helps.

I would rather buy a legit chip from an authorized seller. If I have any problems, with I'd, personel will help me in the future.

Off the street chips are normally registered under an "unknown" name and I cannot get help if I need it.

My last chip I used for 10 years or so. I fear it is dead. If I need a replacemet, .

MEMBER #: can you recomed a personel authorized dealer likely open on Dec. 25? Maybe they can get my old number back if it has not been reassigned and provide a modern chip which can accept data. My current travel phone is a Nexus 4 smart phone. I still have my old moto v197 with all my numbers stored on the phone.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Bob, you're not going to find anything open on the 25th. Your best bet is to get someone to try and sort it out before you arrive. I'd do it for you if I was here, but as already mentioned, I'm shipping out for Christmas! Alternatively you might be better off abandoning the 25th as a lost cause. You should find things open on the 26th.

This is a retail outlet for cell phones.

They are the #1 seller on mercadolibre where you can see their entire inventory of over 50 models of cell phones.

Open 6 days a week at 10 am.

Good prices, good service, everything guaranteed for a year.

When my old phone died, they had me up and running with a new phone along with a factory battery fully charged out the door in less than 10 minutes.

Who says you can't get good service here?

Currently most sims sold here are full with a micro cut out, so iphone 3 or 4 are fine. If it's the kind that go in a 5 or 6 (nano) then you need to get it cut. Most of the cell phone guys here have cutters, it's no big deal.

One of the Boys picked up an attractive Hooker at Newport 2 nights ago and She stole his wallet with $800.00 Dollars in it.

It can happen anywhere but this Fucking C$U$N$T was not Happy with what he was willing to pay or what they had agreed on so she ripped him off!

Will have her name in a few hours too.

Do you know what the quickest way to get a sim card at the airport?

Thanks!Sim Card:

I understand that they Do offer them at the airport but like Everything else at the airport it will be about 10 times the price of what it is downtown. Maybe?

Cards are readily available. Some are operational in an hour or 2 and some take up to 48 hours.

Some come with phone credit and some do Not.

They are All very inexpensive.

I have a few spare sims that I Lend to the Boys if I can find them.

Phones too.

The Phone is free but the contacts are priceless!

Sim at the Airport:

If you MUST have one.

Only if it's Immediately operational, comes with credit and a BBBJ included.

Downtown they are about 30 or 40 pesos I think. Probably 300 at the airport.

No idea.

Have Fun,

Claro 10 pesos, with no credit.

Movistar 30 pesos, with some credit.

Both took couple of hours to activate.I use Personal so Thanks for the info on the other carriers but the cost of the Sim seems to depend on from whom or where you buy it.

Directly from Personal should be a "New" chip, unregistered, with zero credit and about 24 hours to become active.

I bought one from a Newspaper Stand and the Sim is registered to somebody else but it became operational in 2 hours.

There is a price difference between an Official Carrier's Retailer and a Newspaper Stand.

Not a big deal but at the airport it won't be friendly.

I bought a Simcard on Thursday around noon and it did not get activated until around Monday morning at 01:00.

If you are flying in and use a travel phone like I do you might want to pay one of the travel agents on the board to buy a chip and activate it for you so you can get on ground moving faster. For me, I was lucky to have a regular that I could Whatsapp on my US phone. Without a phone you are always looking for Wifi hotspots which in today's world are common.

The message on Movistar is that the Simcard will be activated in one hour. The difference between one hour and 4 days is quite large in my opinion. Movistar did not meet their own business standards in my case.

Plus i spent another hour conversing with 5 different people just to see if they knew anything. It was a huge time waster.

While I am, of course, extremely shocked that an argie company would not meet its business standard, let me point out that it was activated in one hour, four days later. They just didn't say which hour. This is similar to how argie landlords will advertise that an apartment has a washing machine, even though said washing machine does not work. It is true that the apartment has a washing machine.

10G is paying for a ton of data. You must watch video or listen to music. I use less than 2G a month. Most music services don't count against your data allowance on T-Mobile.

The 10GB is a family plan promotion (4 lines for $120) and all the lines have to have 10GB or more. Individual plans start at $30 with 1GB of data.

The international roaming service is great as long as you accept that it only comes with 2G speeds. If you buy your phone on one of the T-Mobile promotion plans, it's locked so a local SIM isn't an option.

With minutes ?Have not bought a SIM in Argentina in a few years but the cost in the past was nominal for the SIM. Voice calls and texts to other mobiles are relatively expensive (but I never averaged more than a few bucks a day) while data plans varied wildly between carriers. Navigating the whole process of figuring out the plans, acquiring the SIM, getting it activated, and recharging the phone and applying the data packs was a pain in the butt especially if your Spanish is weak. T-Mobile free data and the replacement of SMS by services like WhatsApp have lessened the value of a local SIM enough that I have not bothered with one the last few trips. It still can be an inconvenience not having a local number as nobody is going to want to call you back or text a US number, but a local SIM has gone from a "must have" to making a trade-off between cost and convenience. I do without more to avoid the hassle than to save a couple of bucks a day.

I find it a hassle to buy a sim card in every country especially if you are there for only 3 or 4 days. It takes at least an hour. Google FI charges $20 a month plus $10 per gig of data usage. I find that I use less than 1 gig a month so for me it would only be $30. I am paying $60 on my current plan. Recently, T-moblie shifted their service so they do wifi calling anyway when I am connected to wifi.

I suppose the disadvantage would be that you could only reach girls that use Whatsapp or Viber. In some countries girls will not answer foreign phones. Budapest for example.

I just buy one in the airport or train station where I enter the country and it takes about 5 minutes. Maybe I am misunderstanding something here. Sorry about that if I am.

I looked at the link and so it gives you a better rate on your smart phone than what you would pay for using your smart phone internationally? Is that it?

I just use my dumb phone to call up hookers so maybe that is why I was not aware of this. You are talking about calling chicas in country X while still in country Y?

Thanks!

Thanks!Remember you have far superior language skills. I need the data plans to run my translators and I like to use Google Maps. But 5 minutes to get a sim card??? They always want to get a copy of my passport. There always seems to be a line. It takes time to find the store. Becasue I do not speak the languages I need the shop assistant to run the sign up. I guess stupidity always has its costs.

I ordered it already. We'll see how it works. I am going to Playa Del Carmen in July.

One thing is that you are limited to Google phones which are going up in price. The monthly fee is less but the initial investment is higher. Also Google is accelerating their replacement cycle. For example, they now are not updating the Nexus 5 that came out in October 2013.

I always have a copy of my passport in my pants pocket, although they will also take my driver's license. When I bought my $18.18 phone in Panamá it took a bit longer, but I had to choose the phone. I look at google maps on the internet in my hotel or apartment, write down turn by turn directions, and draw stupid little maps in my stupid little notebook. I mean an actual paper notebook that fits in my shirt pocket.

In a lot of countries, it's not that I have superior language skills but that they do. Of course I do speak good Spanish, a fair amount of Italian, and a non-zero amount of French but in places like Latvia or Croatia, I am sure glad my first language is English and that the internet has led so many younger people to learn English. Cuz those languages with the weird alphabets and all the funny symbols on top of or hanging off the letters are kind of a b!tch, as are the ones like Dutch where it seems like every other word is 27 letters long.

It's funny but in the US, if I call someone in the US it costs me about 12 cents a minute and the same if someone from the US calls me. I can call the US from Spain for 3 euro cents a minute and if someone calls me, it costs me zero. Makes no sense but there you have it.

Again, thanks for the info.

I guess the only other question I have is, what's a "monthly fee"? Is that like when someone sends you a bill and you have to pay it? I hear rumors of things like electricity bills, water bills, property tax bills, car insurance bills, and stuff like that but I don't really understand them. And what's this "alimony" stuff I keep hearing guys talk about? And child support? Why can't these children just forage?

When I was in Ireland back in the mid-70s, you put coins in the electricity meter and when you ran out of coins, you sat there in the dark. When I need more credit on my phone, I add five euro or whatever the least amount of local currency is. When I need to go somewhere I stick some coins or a credit card in a machine and a bus, train, or subway ticket pops out. I like these better than these "monthly fees" which seem like some kind of a government plot against the common man.

Mais à chacun son goût, as they say in Québec where I am headed in a few days. We'll see how good my language skills are there. It's been a long time since I had to use my high school French. Je regrette mais je parle peu francais et ou est le bain s'il vous plait? And hope they point to the bathroom. Merci beaucoup.

I'm coming down to BA for 2 months. Previously I've used my Verizon plan for roaming but their international plan sucks - $25 for a measly 100 MB of data, which I use multiple times over even though I try to restrict usage when not in a wifi zone.

So what can I get locally and how? SIM card ? Sorry this is not my area of expertise.

If it takes a few hours and requires good Spanish that's fine.

Thanks.
