Well, at least the article didn't QUITE blame it all on the guys.

Articles like this leave me questioning myself along the lines of "How dare I play the pay-for-play game, when women feel like that about it? And, by extension, they feel that way about me?

At the same time, I look at "Love USA Style" and I'm completely revulsed. Yeah, I'd have to pour money out of my pockets to convince some predatory woman that I'd be worth entrapping, then I "buy the cow" and give over my money, my "stuff", my happiness and my future into her keeping. Step up to the altar; put the ring on her finger, she puts a ring in my nose, and we all live crappily ever after.

This article just makes me feel sick about myself. Thanks a whole f***in' lot.

This article just makes me feel sick about myself. Thanks a whole f***in' lot. That article's not so bad. They didn't try to assert that every chica in the trade doesn't really want to be there. They just made the obvious point that the stereotype of all gatos living the high life and enjoying their craft is inaccurate. They do talk about the fact that the police in Buenos Aires used to shake down girls but they say it doesn't happen much anymore except in the provinces. Finally, they say that a bunch of the chicas in massage parlors are minors. I've never seen an obvious minor myself, but I have only been to two or three privados. I don't like them much. I would hope that folks would avoid a 13-14 year old chica -- which should be obvious to anyone's eye -- but undoubtedly that doesn't happen.

Other than the above, there isn't much by way of the typical parade of horribles that you normally see in articles like this. They do assert:

"Poverty is not the cause for the existence of prostitution, it is merely a factor assuring a constant supply to meet the male demand for buying sexual access to women's bodies, which is the primary reason that prostitution exists."

(Start soap box)

What they don't elaborate on, however, is that male demand is going to be there whether prostitution is easily accessible or not. It just is. The real issue for societies is how to deal with that fact. Viewed in that light, it's easy to understand why many societies promote marriage and monogamy, but increasingly that doesn't "sell" as well as it used to.

One can look at Buenos Aires and presume that it's backwards in this regard. Actually, I think they've got a more enlightened approach: Forbid pimping; keep the police off the girls' backs; crack down on minors entering the trade, and those responsible for putting them there (including the johns); but otherwise the chicas ought to have a right to do what they want with their bodies.

As the quote above notes, poverty is a factor. But no one will ever come up with the prescription to eliminate poverty -- it's relative, so it will always exist. "Poverty" and the laws of supply and demand will always be contributing factors when a good looking chica would rather earn 500 pesos a day as a prostitute than 40 pesos a day as a maid. That shouldn't surprise anyone, though. The article notes that the prostitute's union wants jobs so they can make 500 pesos a day (or whatever will make it easier to survive) at something other than prostitution. But, that's where the laws of supply and demand come in. Like poverty, no one will ever be able to abolish how supply and demand work.

(End of soap box)

P. S - I do have a reputation to uphold!Just another lame article bemoaning the life of the working girl. Their main problem is the problem we all have, and wish we didn't- we have to work to make a living. You don't have decent skills, you get an unskilled job. Very few people like bottom of the barrel, unskilled jobs, men or women. The reason prostitution is frequently singled out (mostly by women) is that those that single it out DON'T LIKE AND APPROVE OF SEX, AND GENERALLY SPEAKING, DON'T LIKE MEN. Period. The focus on prostitution is a convenient way for them to vent their spleen about their hatred of sex and men without fear of being told to shut the fuck up. They figure prostitution is perceived as an onerous enough activity that no one will question their motives for all their bellyaching. Of course most of them have the insight of a bag of hammers and if you accuse them of hating sex and men they will go through the roof.

The ladies doth protest too much methinks.

The ladies doth protest too much methinks. What do you mean "unskilled"? In my experience, most of them are quite skilled. (Yes, I'm kidding a bit; I know what you mean.

Then again, you're probably right: It's the unskilled ones who are doing the bitching. If they had any skills, they'd be too busy working. Note the reference in the article to the 60-year old former pro.

From 20 years old to 40 years old, she probably did quite well and didn't utter a peep. It's only after her skills went away that she started to try to "reform" the system.

There's another reference in the article to a younger pro who's at the prostitute union hall with a low cut bra and her cleavage hanging out. If she really hates it that much, why is she advertising when she's off duty? Turn off the neon lights when the store's closed, sister.;-)

Yes, yes, the semi-incessant drumbeat of holier than thous that want boxing banned. They come to the debate with their stats of boxers killed, etc and etc. The next time you are confronted by one of these assholes, just point out to them that there are more people killed scaling mountains than in the sport of boxing. Why the fuck aren't they screaming bloody murder about the mountain climbers dying? Why? BECAUSE THEY DON'T LIKE BOXING! It has zilch to do with deaths in boxing.

These anti-prostitution, anti-boxing types, and you can add in a bunch of other "anti" jackasses as well, are nothing more than a pack of controlling fascists who have nothing better to do with themselves. My prescription for them-go out and get laid and get in a fight somewhere. You'll feel better.;)

I agree with Doggboy and Stan Da Man's observations on how skewed the article is. The article is biased toward street girls and does not take into account that there are working guys in BA as well or that there are more girls working in privados / clubs / cafes than are working the streets.

The situations and conditions they are mentioning are more prevalent in the poorer sections on the outskirts of the city I am sure, but instead of dealing with the real issues there (crime, high cost of goods, no real job prospects) they instead focus on a symptom of those who live there.

"Prostitution is a relative of hunger. Being whores, sex workers, escorts, sexual servants or whatever you want to label it, we are inhabiting an identity imposed by the fact that we have lost everything." Sonia Sánchez, founder of AMMAR-Capital, in an excerpt from 'Ninguna mujer nace para puta' (No Woman is Born to be a *****)"

I don't know about you guys but the high end escorts in NYC are billing at $400/ hour (can anyone say Spitzer? Or more, I would love to ***** myself out at that rate (easier than going to law school) And yes no woman is born a *****, it requires training and skills, so why not offer ***** training, maybe even a certification system. Get those old whores off the streets and into the classroom teaching the younger generation.

I couldn't be bothered to read the entire article, but I'm sure it says the same thing as all the rest. And Doggboy basically said it all and then some in his response.

The only thing I'll add is that I have never understood is why these folks consider selling your body for SEX is better or worse than selling your body working in a coal mine or working construction.

Actually, I do know. It's the puritanical attitude towards sex that we have.

Sure there is social stigma related to that particular job, but I know guys who have worked construction for 30 years that can barely even walk now. Unless we are lucky, we all sell something to pay the rent.

Cheers

Schmoj, Totally agree with you! If a girl has sex and enjoys it. It is anyday better than working at a construction site!

I don't post to much here because most of the time I get my ass served on a platter here. I read Schmos responce and I agree 1000% .

As a construction worker that has worked 30 some yrs in the field, a bad day of getting fucked is better than 1 day in the field.

I would use that to every extent possible for my own personal advancement.

I enjoy encounters with chicas, pro and nonpro, alike. If there was a way to incorporate personal enrichment with sex, I'd do it in a heart beat.

I once was waiting outside of Paraguay 930 to go in and I saw a rather hefty guy, I mean round, leaving the place. I mean big guy.

I also one night was hanging around 1707 Sante Fe when there was an Artie Johnson Laugh in old man look alike standing on the corner I assume having left the place. I lost my mojo.

I make no judgements of age or physical state as I have gotten older and a rounder as well, but I am sure in the course of the week they get all sizes, shapes, ages, clean or not, drunk, kinky types and all types other than AP members.

My point is while it might appear glamorous I think it is a tough play and I don't know how they can block it out.

I am sure for them there is no option to say no!

Imagine that it is reverse and you are the American gigolo? Are you into it with a 250 lb woman who wants daty? For 200 pesos?

Well this article doesn't add anything to what everybody in the world already knows. Prostitution is not exclusive of the argentinean society, it happens around the world. Some ladies are forced some do it voluntarily. Sex slavery is disgusting and should be banned at all costs.

For those who volunteeer all I can say is they make fast money but its not easy money. Do they prefer earning pennies in a decent job or getting much more than they could in a 9-5 job in the sex trade? I think personal values are to be considered in each person's choice.

What do male ho's got to say about this subject? Their opinion would be interesting.

IMO in many cases feminist carpet munchers have too much power influencing a society's choices, after all and as they also say it's their body and its their choice. If they don't do it in Argentina they will migrate to other countries. Just look at how many working Argies you find in Spain, The US, México, etc.

The law has pressured Craigs List to end the category of Adult Services.

Now, if you select this in the services sector, a response of CENSORED.

Comes up. Reasons for the action were to stamp out underage and.

Regular (prostitution.

Sex prison has just shut down another outlet for sexually aware people.

A year ago Craigslist changed their posting rules to require a valid phone number to post advertisements in this section. In the SF bay area this caused a flood of craigslist providers to start posting on other local Escort sites. I witnessed this first hand on one of the more popular sites. At least in the SF Bay Area, the players in the escort game know how to do business without craigslist. Sadly, the politicos will play this up as actually having done something effective. Reality is, this has / will do nothing to solve the problem they are targeting.

For my visit to BA starting tomorrow, can someone please tell me how to say "blowjob" and CIM in Spanish.

================================================

Hi DonRoberto,

With all due respect, the topic of this thread is "Capital of Sin: The State of Prostitution in Buenos Aires", which is a discussion regarding a news story published on the internet about prostitution in Buenos Aires.

However, using the forum's search function took me about 10 seconds to identify that the forum has an established thread for discussing spanish phrases:

http://www.argentinaprivate.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1809

Therefor, I would very much appreciate it if you would consider reposting your question about spanish translations in the thread on that topic.

Thanks,

Jackson

One thing that the various articles I've read about women prostitutes in Argentina never seem to mention - most of the ladies are making far more money than, say, guys who work an "honest" job digging ditches, who are relatively skillless. These guys may start around 1200 pesos a month and may get as high as 3000 a month if they work their asses off 10 hours a day six days a week. Or guys who work carrying, washing and stocking vegetables in a verduleria for 1500 pesos a month. These stories I have seen always come from the point of view of a spoiled western society. It's sure as hell not comparing apples to apples, and the articles are written with that viewpoint.

In a society where the government pretty much screws everyone except those in power and those who are friends with those in power and those who have large sums of money, prostitutes often live better lives than, say, live-in maids who are often treated as slaves at worst or servants at best. There are so many hold-overs from feudal days remaining in Argentina and other Latin American countries, but without any of the "noblesse oblige" that was supposed to have gone along with feudalism.

As far as the working women tolerating fat, smelly guys - I wonder: I wonder how nurses feel changing bed pans, bandages, treating people who throw up on them, whatever other kind of "abuse" you can imagine that nurses have to go through on a daily basis. Particularly here in Argentina where they are not paid on the same scale as, say, in the States.

The working girl earns it the hard way. I believe some are pulling down some seRious scratch. From past experience I would guess the average tenure of a working girl is probably around a year, then some return (15. That is why I am amazed that some honeys are still doing since my original trip in 2003.
The bigger complaint I heard was dealing with the donkey kongs as well as the guys who want to bang away for two hours straight and come 4 times! Heard once a canadian high end girl say if they want that go get a turkey.

No, not quite. But my visits to "the gardens of fleshly delights" are seldom enough that I refuse to be hurried when I get there. If I pay for an hour I don't want my chica jumping up and bouncing out of the room after fifteen minutes.

On my last "lay-cation, " to the Dominican republic, my final "goodbye girl" chica said yes to dr$1500 for 1½ to 2 hours at the bottom of the stairs, but "dr$1500 por leche" when we'd gotten started. I felt justified in taking my own sweet time!
