Can't wait! Proper 'bucket list' item finally getting ticked off. Even better that Natal is my favourite place in all Brasil - got some great memories of mongering there back in the mid 90s.

I doubt there's any tickets left direct from FIFA. There was a two-phase process to go through to get tickets direct, which finished a few weeks ago. It'll just be through agencies now. I got tickets for all 4 games at one stadium for USD360, not bad at USD90 per game, but I'm guessing you'll pay double that from an agency.
I also got pretty cheap accommodation at a 3-star hotel on the beach for USD60/ night (shared between 2 of us). I found a LOT cheaper too (like USD20/ night), but we decided it was worth paying a bit more to have a nice pool and being near the beach as we'll be there for 13 days.
The killer is the flights. Sounding very tempting, I may succumb.Yep, group games cover the first 2 weeks. They're not doing groups at a single or even across 2 venues, as has been the norm previously. We'll be seeing 4 games from 4 different groups, so we'll see 8 different teams. Being one of the smaller venues, we'll be mainly watching the lower ranked teams. Just one seeded team and one second rank team I think. That's the only reason I managed to get tickets. Because they're less popular! The first phase 'draw' (supposedly random) was total a scandal, with countries like Canada having 30+% of applicants getting tickets and the average being around 20%, but of all the applicants from Argentina (including me) only 1.5% were successful! The second round was 'first come first served' and I was pressing the button the second it opened and was eventually successful trying my 3rd venue.
As the draw hasn't even been made yet, we have no idea which teams we'll be watching! But we don't really care, we're going for the experience!

Given that we arrive on the day of our first game, we'll be cutting it a bit fine. Luckily we're walking distance from the stadium and the ticket centre is on the way.
I also decided to check our hotel reservation (made through despegar.com) and although I've got a pdf confirmation voucher with the dates and rates clearly marked and a reservation number, when I called the hotel they claimed to have no record of us! So I checked my despegar.com account and guess what? ALL of my records have disappeared (and I've been a regular user over the years). I checked the hotel's web-site to see if we could still book and yes, we can, but instead of the are $1781 (USD790) we were previously quoted, the cost would now be are $6846 (USD3040)! I eventually found a phone number to call despegar.com and on putting the reservation number into their automated system I got a message saying "your reservation is confirmed, enjoy your trip".

Watching the WC here in Bangkok will be an adventure:
1. 12 AM-4 AM curfew still in effect in Bangkok.
2. Nearly all games fall somewhere in that time slot (no watching in bars or you break curfew and the military have reason to bust your ass. Depending on their mood.
3. TV watching at home is a dog's breakfast due to battles between cable companies. If I'm "lucky" I'll get a dish at the last minute. If not, I may be able to watch with Thai commentary.
I wish I was back in Buenos Aires for the next month!

Ghana v USA.Does anybody remember this matchup 4 years ago when the USA had a corner kick at a crucial point in the game, during which 4 Ghanaian players mugged 4 USA players directly in front of the goal? The Ghanaian players wrapped and locked their arms completely around the USA players as the ball sailed right into the group, and the referee who was standing right there saw nothing.

If a girl dolls herself up, positions herself in an environment where you will encounter her, attracts your attention with her coquettish behavior, and you ultimately decide to make her an offer and bring her back to your place, then you would characterize her as "controlling your happiness"?
Corporations in general, and specifically corporations in the entertainment business, achieve success by appealing to your interests and satiating your inner desires, not by somehow controlling / forcing you to go against your interests.
Let me say it another way: The individuals attending a sporting event may decide for themselves that at a particular moment they are more interested in the food offerings at the stadium than they are in the entertainment offerings. There is no corporate level decision forcing them one way or the other or "controlling their happiness".

;-)Yes American Football is odd to outsiders. And I challenge you to name another sport that has as much going on, with as much intensity during those few seconds, where one missed assignment, one momentary lapse in concentration results in a 7 point play, then do that 130 times.
I've become a futbal fan and certainly don't put it down. But when it comes to intensity and concentration (like those few penalty kicks in footy) nothing matches the NFL. (Rugby comes close, but only on defense).
1. No "time outs". If you want a break, you ain't having one. Tough shit.
2. Only three substitutions per game. If you use your three subs and a player gets hurt or sent off. No replacements. You play a man down. Tough shit.
3. No designated hitter. If you want to play you have to be in shape. No fatties allowed. If you're a fatty. Tough shit.
4. The only "instant replay" is goal line technology to determine if the ball has crossed the line for a goal. And its INSTANT. No waiting around for five minutes while a decision is made.
5. No commercials. At least not in England. The Argies run commercial shit across the screen at times.
6. Barring extra time or penalties the games run just under two hours. NFL and college football are now three hours plus and college ball at times four. Baseball? Ordinarily around three, sometimes a lot more. Course the advertising suits like those long games.
7. With the exception of minor tweaks there have been no changes in how the game is played in decades. Statistics have validity dating back as long. Dan Marino wouldn't have to watch as a bunch of fucking posers break his records. Hank Aaron would still be the home run king. Endless examples.
Hey, I grew up with USA sports and still follow them, but I have found them less enjoyable through the years. It did do my heart good to see a rough and tumble, defense oriented team that knows how to run the football win the Super Bowl though.

Both fouls on live play seem relatively harmless, but the replay tells another story. On one, Julio Ceasar was knocked down while waiting to collect the high ball. Goalies are always protected in situations like these. On the other foul, even as he was falling out of position, Lovren tugged at Fred's shoulder as Fred turn towards the ball and a clear shot at goal from very close range. Not a outrageous foul, but clearly affecting Fred's balance to stay on his feet and shoot. The reaching out and pulling on Fred's shoulder very clear on the replay.

There were a few milestones in their sights within the 2014 World Cup. The core of their team, Casillas, Alonso, Xavi, Inesta, Torres, Villa are in their declining years, and I think the reason for the shellacking they got from Holland. It is isn't that the rest of the Spanish squad are also old and without talent. Hardly the case, as most are established starting stars from the top teams around Europe. But maybe, the leadership and the spirit is tired? As is the country, Spain at the moment.
Holland had the motivation of revenge for the last World Cup Final. Except for Van Persie, Robben and Snejlder, the Dutch team is an assortment of anonymous names and journeymen unless you follow the Dutch League. But the threesome oozes leadership. And the first 2 have been unstoppable prolific scorers in the last few seasons in Europe and they were the difference. Spain's major weakness is the absence of a killer striker, although there were hopes that Diego Costa might be the answer to their prayers. There are no others in sight. Where are the matadors when you need them?
You remain hopeful if you are a Spanish fan, the Chile game is a must win but a tie can still do it but they have to beat Australia by an immense score then. You never know, but Holland might prefer to do Chile a favor rather than Spain. Tomorrow is Sunday, so maybe a visit to the Church might be in order for Spanish hopes.
I don't have a favorite, and not betting. So every game is delicious, especially looking out for young emerging talents. But the time zone is a killer in Bangkok. My tennis game is going to be the victim of the sleepness nights. Double faults, unforced error, missed overheads and volleys, oh no!
An amazing blitzkrieg form the Tulip Sniffers. Robben and Van Persie were lights out. Costa was invisible for Spain other than drawing a questionable penalty. Casillas looked old and at the end I felt sorry for him. He took a horrible beating.
It seems del Bosque has misplaced his faith in some of the old guard. Were it me for the next match, Costa would be on the bench and replaced by either Pedro or Fabregas. Reina or De Gea in for Casillas. After a defeat like that you can't stand pat.

Italy was slower to get going, but their more precise play allowed them go ahead and eventually scored the winner for a 2-1 win. There was really not that much difference between the two teams, but Italy's two superstars, Pirlo and Balotelli made the crucial difference. Vamos a ver.Not so long ago, every team had one as in point guard in basketball. The ball transition through him from defense to offense. Often, he would saunter and dally as if he was checking out the neighborhood, passing back & forth with the back 4 or his mid-field partners. If urgency was needed, he passing skills would come into play and he would spray passes onto the running lanes to his wingers or chipping passes over the heads of the central defenders. Heady, skillful, with a cunning shot, the maestro would weave and slalom his way down the field with the casual indifference that pedestrians exhibit while trying to cross a busy street in Saigon. Riquelmine? Was the last of his kind for Argentina. I think Argentina should use Messi there. His first touch and the ability to beat the 1st defender would the give him the space to find his targets. And with Di Maria, Aguero & Higuain upfront lurking, this would be a dream offense, rather than the bogged down affair we saw last night.
Modern football now showcase more athleticism. Speed all around is more evident. Defense is more pressing and higher up the field. The maestro has to get rid of the ball faster. And more is also required of the maestro, he is now needed on defense, too.
As such, the position now is somewhat modified.
My favorite was Overath of the 1970's German dynasty teams of Backenbauer, Breitner, Maier, etc who only use his left foot for every touch, pass or shot. Despite this oddity, he was never flustered or lost possession. Valderrama of Colombia was also a 1 footed wonder.

For better or worse Rev, Sabella has ditched the traditional #10 that you speak of. Or as they refer to that role in Argentina, the "enganche" (hook). He prefers a deep lying playmaker like Pirlo for Italy but doesn't set up his formation to include an enganche playing in the hole behind the strikers (like Riquelme with Boca). At Estudiantes he had Juan Veron as the deeper playmaker (they call them "quarterbacks" in soccer now because they can see the pitch from deep and launch passes short or long). But, you know that because you are a football whoare.
At any rate, no legit enganche with the NT now though Messi actually does play that role often as a false #9. Fernando Gago is the box to box midfielder who links with Messi. Argentina was much improved yesterday when Gago came on to begin the second period. He was never a star in Europe but essential to Argentina's success through the qualifiers.
The set up with the enganche is the classic model and the one I prefer, but it seems to be slowly moving out of fashion (not out of fashion at Arsenal though). There are still some good Argentine enganches around, though Riquelme is a bit long in the tooth. The best at present is Andres D'Alessandro who is playing for Inter in Porto Alegre. Another Europe wash out who has been a star with Inter for years now and very well thought of in Brazil. Not so long ago, every team had one as in point guard in basketball. The ball transition through him from defense to offense. Often, he would saunter and dally as if he was checking out the neighborhood, passing back & forth with the back 4 or his mid-field partners. If urgency was needed, he passing skills would come into play and he would spray passes onto the running lanes to his wingers or chipping passes over the heads of the central defenders. Heady, skillful, with a cunning shot, the maestro would weave and slalom his way down the field with the casual indifference that pedestrians exhibit while trying to cross a busy street in Saigon. Riquelmine? Was the last of his kind for Argentina. I think Argentina should use Messi there. His first touch and the ability to beat the 1st defender would the give him the space to find his targets. And with Di Maria, Aguero & Higuain upfront lurking, this would be a dream offense, rather than the bogged down affair we saw last night.
Modern football now showcase more athleticism. Speed all around is more evident. Defense is more pressing and higher up the field. The maestro has to get rid of the ball faster. And more is also required of the maestro, he is now needed on defense, too.
As such, the position now is somewhat modified.
My favorite was Overath of the 1970's German dynasty teams of Backenbauer, Breitner, Maier, etc who only use his left foot for every touch, pass or shot. Despite this oddity, he was never flustered or lost possession. Valderrama of Colombia was also a 1 footed wonder.
Woke up a little at 5 am, stunned to see that the good ole USA ahead of Ghana, 1-0. With the fans still looking for their seats, Dempsey, the experienced Premier Leaguer, took his chance beautifully from the left, striking the ball perfectly onto the far post as the Ghanian goalie came to meet him. Ghana, with almost all their players playing in European leagues is the more talented side. And so for the rest of the game, the US was in total defensive mode as the Ghanians dominate play & territory. But the very experienced American team anchored by goalie Tim Howard never panicked and managed to withstood the Ghanian non-stop bombardment. At least until Ayew came down the left side of the penalty box and received a beautiful pass with just the goalie to beat. Howard gave him no angle to shoot but with the outside of his left foot, he sliced the ball into the top right hand corner of the goal. As exquisite a move and shot you will not see. You would think this is over for the Americans, they would collapse. But no, the Americans contrived to get a corner at the 89 minute mark. An anonymous American by the name of John Brooks, got his head to the ball amidst a sea of standing Ghanians drinking tea and into the net. And then, the clock ran out, and our prayers were answered. Halelujah!

It does not make sense to me how they picked which teams play which teams.
To me it would make sense if they put the top eight favorites in different groups.
The favorite in Group A, the second in Group be, etc.
Or rather, South Korea vs Russia. Russian peasantry vs Korean innovation? Asia vs Europe. 20 years ago, you could easily see the physical disparity between them. Today, as the the teams took took to the field, there was no difference is height or size. In fact, the Koreans had the edge, if I could trust my eyes at 5 in the morning. Fierceness a common denominator.
The 1st half, the Russian had a sleight edge in positive play, but mostly in neutral territory. The Koreans came out more stronger in the 2nd half, and took the lead when the Russian goalie mishandled a shot. This is why I always advocate shoot when in sight, you never know what can happen. Laugh away, Doggboy. Before the Korean fans had stopped cheering, the Russians had equalized as a Korean clearance in the box unluckily hit a Russian and luckily bounced to his teammate who tapped it in.
And so it ended in a tie. A physical affair, not a pretty game at all.

FYI-when a player is sent off for a red card they usually miss the next three games. It can be even longer if the Football Association for that league decides to lengthen it. I think it was 10 games Luis Suarez got when he chomped on another player last year in England.

If you have never been to a Liverpool practice session, this game gave you what you will often see. 5 Liverpool players, Johnson, Gerrard, Henderson, Sturridge and Sterling chasing Suarez, and never getting a sniff of the ball. Oh, I forgot about the new Liverpool signing Lambert watching from off the side, and Everton's Baines, Jagielka and Barkley peering from across town Everton, wishing they could help!

Have to watch the replay. The English goalie, Hart lean to his left rather than squaring up, and Suarez smashed the ball across Hart's body to the wide side. A technical error, maybe, I'm too harsh. But we saw that Mexican goalie, Ochoa who was able to inflate his body 8 feet wide against Brazil and stopped every shot.
And Colombia keeps on trucking. They are going to win their group. As I told my brother, no Falcao, no problem. Still plenty of firepower in the arsenal. Alot of weapons not in the NRA handbook.
Up next, over-spending bankrupt Greece vs strong-savings Japan. At times, I have thought that the play of the teams often reflect the current state of their economies, and thus, their national morale & outlook. So far, I see Japan taking it to Greece. We shall see.

Indeed, England undone by Suarez. He of the immaculate diving / feigning skills coupled with football genius. Despite his personality deficits he is remarkable to watch. The first goal a moment of glorious improvisation between Suarez and Cavani resulting in a perfectly placed Suarez header, and the second the result of awful England defending coupled with Suarez's lethal finishing. And all that 3 or 4 weeks after knee surgery.
England's defense was porous the entire match with Jag from Everton almost invisible. Cahill did what he could but even he was at times out of position. Gerrard is just flat out too old and without super defensive skills to be put in the position of holding midfielder. If you hated Liverpool you could say Gerrard cost Liverpool the EPL title as well as any chance of progressing in the WC. Great guy, I think, but not up to the position he has been put in.

Behold, another huge game for the exhausted soccer fan.
Costa Rica, coffee beans and all, made the Italians pay the price for overcharging their macchiato all these years. I was able to only watch the last few minutes, so I will not comment on the play. But I read that my boy, Joel Campbell had a very influential game and gave Arsenal fans all over the world the tingling feeling. Bryan Ruiz, the Fulham reject, not only captained Costa Rica but deliver the goal that sunk the Italians. And damn, it's that Suarez guy again! I heard that the Italians en masse are queuing up for confession to purge any lurking bad luck that might decide the outcome. Euphoria after England has been replaced by doubts and fears.
Should the Italians get knock out, it would mean that the old European powers are left in the hands of France, Germany and Netherlands, and maybe, Belgium. It's the New World coming out party, and it's quite a shock to the system. But plenty of room at the table, perturbing only if your underwear is a little tight.
Lots of surprises so far which makes for an entertaining WC, not to mention many great close matches. A feast.
Argentina takes on Iran today in their second match. No more fooling around with the 5-3-2. 4-3-3 so Messi will be happy and it seems Messi is intent on trying to curb Sabella's tendency to be conservative. Good for Messi. Time to fill the lineup with heavy hitters and let Messi swing away form the clean up spot. With all the surprises so far its probably foolhardy to try to predict anything, but the Argentina match could be a rout. Hopefully Iran won't call on the Quds Force.

Arg. Iran. 0-0 first half. Iran has no offense, slow, limited skills. Argentina is overrated (again). Missed header after header by wide margins. I predict Argentina will not win the cup. Bunch of under-achievers who can't finish off plays. Doesn't matter if Arg wins this game. They won't beat Euro powerhouse teams. Even Costa Rica could beat them.
Good for the dollar exchange as confidence in everything continues to collapse. Good for more part-time chicas like in 2003/4.

Both teams lost to Costa Rica so they will try to kill the opponent from minute 1. This will be worth watching! I'm with Uruguay 1-0 or 2-1 but this is gut feeling not actually a rational forecast.

For us non-futbol aficionados, it is fun to see these great players like Renaldo and Messi, whom I have at least heard of, make great plays to turn games in the final minutes of games. I am enjoying the World Cup. The tension is palpable.
Haven't been on here since arriving in Brasil (crap internet connection at the hotel!), but have just caught up on the banter. Very much enjoying your analyses Rev and Dogg. You're both extremely knowlegable about 'soccer' as well as erudite!
Our experience here in Natal got off to a less than enjoyable start as the first two days were a complete wash-out. There was more rainfall in 48 hours than they usually have in 2 months. We sat in the stadium for Mexico v Cameroon, covered in plastic coats, but still getting drenched. We could barely see the far end of the pitch and I spent the entire 90 minutes sat in a puddle with my bollocks under water! Not even 15,000 crazy Mexican fans could make it enjoyable. I think there was some football played....I don't remember.
Our second match was Ghana v USA, and what a contrast! We declared ourselves Team USA for the day and as luck would have it we were seated in a section that was entirely populated by Americans. I declared before the game that I'd draw the line at chanting "YU - ES - AY", but got caught up in the atmosphere and was straight into the chant as soon as we sat down. The USA fans were every bit as crazy as the Mexicans, but had the advantage of it being a beautiful, warm, dry night. I can't even describe what it was like when Dempsy put the ball into the net after 30 seconds. I've been to a lot of football matches, at Wembley, the Maracana, the Bernabeu etc, but the atmosphere at that moment was the best I've ever experienced! (Even though I got covered in beer by those crazy Americans.) The entire match was one big party. After joining in with the 3 chants / songs that they knew I decided to teach them some new ones. They particularly liked the "Where's you father..." song to be directed at the referee after a bad decision. The celebrations at the final whistle were epic!

I was watching the match on the Spanish station Univision. When overtime started the clock had 4 minutes of extra time posted, then all of a sudden it went to 5 minutes.

Some media criticism of that player today in USA stories.Interesting, because at the end of another game the previous day I watched as the winning team used up 2 minutes of "stoppage time" as one substitute walked of the field in slow motion, followed immediately by a 2nd slow motion substitution by the same team, and the ref didn't add anything to the stoppage time.
In fact, I've never observed any additions to stoppage time even during an outbreak of the sport's renown feigned injuries during those periods.
I restate my previous complaint: Once again the USA was screwed by corrupt officiating at the World Cup.

The whole thing stinks regarding subjective additional time.
Resting their starters since they are guaranteed in the next round, now why would they want to go and do so stupid like that?
Or if anything just have Messi play backfield and use this luxury to practice his defense, you know, aim for a 0-all tie if they don't want to actually lose a game. Or just have him play half the game and sub him out. With Messi being paid 163 million dollars, and being the highest paid player, I would hope they would at least protect him, seeing how they are guaranteed to go to the next round. I mean, I can only assume they are paying so high because they want him around, right? But no, he will most likely put in a power performance and get critically injured in doing so, but not before first revealing their entire playbook, coordination strategies, and game plans.
The good news is that Argentine team hasn't shown much creativity or much of anything special, so I am not sure that there is much to betray. I can only hope that they are holding an ace up their sleeve, but I don't know if they are capable of thinking like that.
Argentina are through to the knock out stage, but plenty of issues. It will be interesting to see how Sabella deals with his duo of out of form strikers, Aguero and Higuain. Both are world class footballers but struggling at the moment. Aguero has had many muscle injuries and has been slow to return to fitness and form. Early in the season in England he was arguably one of the top five strikers in the world. Higuain looks overweight and far from his best. When in top shape he is a very important part of Argentina's attack.
Will Sabella rest them, or play them in hopes of getting them up to speed? Will he give Rodrigo Palacio and Ezequiel Lavezzi a chance to shine? Both very good players, but not really in the class of the top two, when the top two are playing as they are capable.
And Messi? A day off or not? Messi historically hates not to play.

I keep watching the replay, and I can't figure what the heck Sio did wrong against Samaras.
As far as I can see, he's standing in back of him, and it's Samaras who hooks Sio's leg with his foot. Shouldn't he get the foul?
Just because Samaras is the one who falls down, that turns the blame to Sio? No way!
Sio as far as I can see didn't do anything at all to trip Samaras or otherwise interfere with the player. I saw nothing done, no intent to do anything.
So, my question is, why does Sio get penalized for not doing anything?
Why isn't it Samaras who should get the penalty for hooking his foot around Sio's calf??
Inquiring minds want to know! Anybody who knows about soccer, can you help out?
I didn't see the game Bob. Samaras might have got away with one. There is a LOT of feigning / diving / playacting etc. In the penalty area with the express purpose of getting a penalty kick. Tough job being a ref in football.

I have read that some others considered it a non penalty, but there hasn't been a huge uproar. Close calls for penalties are a frequent thing in football. Annoying, but not much to be done about it.

I think there only two or three singing.While I love our National Anthem, it would make a shitty fight song for a football match. "My Country Tis of Thee" would be better but we stole that tune from the Brits ("God Save the Queen") so that would be bad form. Maybe "America the Beautiful" it has a sort of martial sound to it and probably 50% could remember it.
Considering our generally low test scores chanting USA, USA, USA is probably better, though it could use a chord change or two.

As a result, Neymer, Jo and Hulk were impotent because they received their balls too far away from the goal. Oscar again disappointed on the right wing, and Marcelo & Alves must have been instructed to not stray too far upfield. A team determined to play it safe. Brazil versus Colombia! Ought to be a great one with Colombia looking very confident at the moment, and Brazil inching through by the skin of their (not Suarez's) teeth. I'm hoping Colombia can take this one and move on. Their coach, Jose Pekerman, nearly led Argentina to success in WC 2006 only to be foiled by one moment of bad luck and one poor decision on his part. He resigned after that loss to Germany which started a number of years of Argentina playing below their capabilities. Argentina would have been much better off if he had remained their coach.

Netherlands vs Mexico will be a fun match.If you were to compare player by player on the field, Chile only had 2 players that could have made the Brazilian team, Vidal & Sanchez. Whereas, Brazil's starting 11 are among the best & most expensive players in the world in their respective positions. But it's a team game, and so you can neutralize overwhelming talent by strategies, teamwork, fitness, desire & adrenaline. In the NBA, man to man defense is mandatory, a technical foul will be call otherwise. And then, there is the offside rule.
The way I saw it, Brazil with overwhelming talent was very cautious and played not-to-lose. But you were spot-on overall.
After the USA v Ghana match, our next outing was for Japan v Greece. There were some logistics to be worked out because the game was immediately preceded by England v Uruguay, which was a crucial match for England that we weren't going to miss for anything and we already knew that it would take us at least 90 minutes to get to the stadium. We'd had no luck with the buses, taxis were impossible to find and it was a 9km (5.5 miles) walk. We'd scouted out a restaurant to watch the England match which was only 20 minutes walk from the stadium and made our way there in the morning.
We got a great table in the restaurant, right in front of the TV.....and wished we hadn't bothered - England were abysmal! We were literally trudging to the stadium afterwards, heads down and not really looking forward to Japan v Greece - we couldn't even be arsed to choose a team to support. Then we heard people asking for tickets, looked at each other and without even saying a word, went straight over to offer our tickets for sale. As soon as we started talking we were surrounded by another half dozen people looking for tickets and we were still a good 15 minutes away from the stadium - we really didn't think there'd be that much demand for this match. Anyways, we were so uninterested in football right at that moment that we happily sold our tickets at cost price and headed back to the beach!
When Italy lost to Costa Rica the next day and confirmed England's exit we even started talking about the possibility of selling our tickets for Italy v Uruguay. Only half-heartedly, because this was the most glamorous match we had tickets for and it was for 2 teams in England's group, but the match itself now had no significance to us and having seen the demand for a 'nothing' match like Japan v Greece, we started thinking we might make some serious money on these tickets. After a few days chilling on the beach and also finally getting out to enjoy some night-life, we decided that we MIGHT sell, but only if the price was right and set the level at USD500 each, which would cover our hotel bill for the entire stay (we booked it a year in advance - it would have been 4 times as much if we'd booked a month in advance!).
On match day, we set out early for the long walk and virtually at the same point we'd sold our previous tickets we heard somebody selling. I approached to ask how much and was told USD400. So we knew we were in the right ball-park regarding our minimum selling price. We spoke to a few idiots, but the first serious buyers were a couple of Uruguayans. We said 500 and then settled at 450, but unfortunately they'd miscalculated the exchange rate and didn't have enough Reales to pay for them! By this time we were getting pretty close to the stadium and were reluctant to be too open wrt selling - we'd heard stories of arrests of people trying to sell their tickets outside the stadium and were only getting offered 300/200 etc, so, as previously decided we happily entered the stadium, ready to enjoy what was being billed as "The Game" of the first round - the game of death in the group of death!
It was absolutely sh1t. I've seen more exciting football on a cold, rainy Tuesday night at Plymouth Argyle v Preston North End, with a crowd of 1,500 people, in the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy....and that finished 0-0! We didn't even see the infamous Suarez chomping on an Italian defender - it was down the far end of the stadium.
But hey, we ticked one off the bucket list! The overall experience was brilliant. Me and my buddy had a thoroughly relaxing time away from family and work stress - I even partook of the local delights (well, one delight in particular) for the last 3 nights, at only USD70 for the first 2 nights and a freebie on the last night. Not too bad at all.

Suarez definitely prefer Barcelona to Liverpool (even though they have supported him through thick & thin) where he believes that he has taken a beating from the press and unfairly punished by the English Football Association for calling Evra a "blackie". As for Barcelona who already have Neymer & Messi, there is no qualms about ethics as the Neymer saga has already shown. What's a little bite!

But overall, it is a suburban game played by the middle class. Yes, and it is very well organized with good facilities and very structured coaching. So you say, what's wrong with that?
Overall, the rest of the world starts to play soccer earlier and much more often because soccer is the main deal. Like Americans going out to the front yard and throwing the baseball or football. And because they are kicking around in whatever fashion (neighborhood games) and locale (surface), they develop skills and creativity necessitated by tight spacing or irregular bounces of the ball. American youths have beautiful putting greens to play on, well, so it is much easier to putt, So American players at this moment do not compare overall well to other countries when it comes to magic on the field. Yes, they can covered the field, they can make the basic passes, they have size, they have stamina, they can be physical. But there is no magic, not one player the Americans can pull out of the hat. When you have a Michael Bradley as the go-to guy in the middle, then you know the American team will have to win by hard work and bad luck on the other team. Sorry, I had to pick on you, Bradley!
On the inner-city issue, we know where the some of the best athletes in America are. Sprinters, hurdlers, high & long jumpers, running backs, defensive backs, receivers, special teams, outfielders, dunkers, and more. Soccer & Volleyball, 2 sports that could use an infusion of that DNA. There is still time. Soccer is just not cool enough yet, just ask the AP Board of Directors.

They just reached the last 16 at the World Cup FFS! Better than England, Spain, Italy and a whole sh1t-load of countries with 100+ year long histories of playing the game that never even qualified. It's not like American 'football', which only one country in the world plays, or baseball, which 4 countries play, or ice hockey, which 6 countries play - 207 countries entered this World Cup! I think the USA did pretty damned well and in 20 years or so will be up there challenging for the trophy.
Just kick back, have your favorite snacks and spirits beside you, and take in Wimbledon and the World Cup offerings. For appetizers, Wimbledon men semi-finals showcase Djokovic and Federer of the ruling class against the young princes who are knocking on the door, Raonic and Dimitrov Both have been on the rise for a while now, can they do it today? Dimitrov has the tougher match with Djokovic, and whilst he has been able to conquer Maria Sharapova, I don't think he can conquer Djokovic. But I heard it through the grapevine, that Sharapova has issue an ultimatum, that unless he can win a Grand Slam, she cannot continue her relationship with someone below her class. As for Raonic, boasting perhaps the best serve on the tour, I think he is more than ready to take Federer.
And the entrees will be Brazil vs Colombia & France & Germany. Nothing to say here but you will know the food will be good, and perhaps, you will eat too much.

That was the ugliest football ever played by a Brasilian team and if it came to light that the ref had been bought off, unlikely though that might seem at this level, it would come as no great surprise to me. There were over 50 fouls and only 4 bookings, one of which wasn't even a foul and was 'committed' by a player that hadn't previously fouled anyone and was for the free-kick that Brasil scored from, by a player that had committed enough fouls in the first 30 minutes of the game to have received at least 2 yellows and a straight red! Then there was the penalty - the poor ref had no choice to give it (however reluctant he may have been) or there would have been a riot, but how the hell was it NOT a red card for Cesar?!?!!

Sounds like Brazil are playing Dunga-ball again. Against France Neuer reminded me of King Kong on the Empire State building swatting away planes. Flicking away Benzema rockets with one big paw. He's hard to deal with.
Another test for Messidependencia tonight. Rojo is suspended at LB and likely to be replaced by Basanta who is a completely different player. He rarely gets forward and when he does he does little. Also quite a bit of talk that Gago will be replaced by Lucas Biglia. Other than a nice pass or two Gago hasn't done much and I welcome a replacement, but would prefer Enzo Perez from Benfica who is a tough nut. So, its all to play for now. I think Argentina can get by Belgium but after that it will be difficult.

Is this the end of the road for Brazil? Can they survive Germany with 2 of their key players out? We will probably see Dante from Bayern Munich take over for T. Silva. At least he knows German players & German football. But there is nobody of Neymer's stature to replace him. But then again, the Germans are not banging them in in the last 2 games. Zuniga should have been red carded.
Should penalty takers be allow to hesitate or stop & go for the penalty shot? It should be one smooth run up, you can't do the cha cha cha, and then shoot. For me, I would run backwards and kick with my heel, that would really stun the football world.
And I am picking Costa Rica to go all the way. Now that USA is out, we have to support CONCACAF fully.

Yup, that's pretty much on the money. Additionally, if the foul denies the attacking player a clear chance directly on goal it should be an automatic red card for the offender. This is always administered if the foul is committed by the last player before the goalkeeper. In this case it was actually the goalkeeper! There is absolutely no possible explanation as to why Cesar wasn't red-carded. (Except that the referee feared for his life at the hands of 60,000 Brasilian fans.).
Argentina just squeaked past Belgium. Here's hoping for a Germany v Holland final. If bloody Argentina win it I'm getting out of here on the next flight.

Most neutral supporters want the dream final Brazil v Argentina. I'm one of the 99.99% of English people who won't be cheering for Germany. My father and grandfather would turn in their graves if I even thought about supporting them.
There is no stand out team this world cup and on their day any of the 4 could win it, I just hope the match officials don't spoil any of the remaining matches.

Agreed about the lack of a favorite to win it. If forced I'd have to pick Germany. Tons of talent top to bottom and no major injuries since the WC began. Though even with that said they have looked as beatable as anybody else.

Most neutral supporters want the dream final Brazil v Argentina. I'm one of the 99.99% of English people who won't be cheering for Germany. My father and grandfather would turn in their graves if I even thought about supporting them.
There is no stand out team this world cup and on their day any of the 4 could win it, I just hope the match officials don't spoil any of the remaining matches.
When Pele broke out as a 17 year-old at the 1958 World Cup for Brazil, his name became synonymous with soccer.
But until then, Alfredo de Stefano was the superstar of South American and European soccer, so in fact, world soccer. Then on to even bigger arenas & money in Spain. As a result, he ended up representing 3 countries, Argentina, Colombia and Spain. A true centre forward of the old school as opposed to the striker of today, he embodies power, the ability to create space for himself in tight space, and a great shot.

Brazil were over hyped by the media. For most of the past two years they weren't often ranked as a very good side. As the WC approached that changed for no good reason other than they were the host country. As the host country they weren't battle tested because they didn't have to fight their way through the grueling Qualifiers. Scolari was brought in as the manager, even though he is a retread, to pacify the Brazilians because they were ready to crucify the previous manager, Menezes.
Without Thiago Silva last night Brazil's defense was undisciplined, shocked by the first goal and damn near euthanized by the second. They looked like the walking dead. Luiz was everywhere except where he was supposed to be. The Germans are big, strong, fast and talented. And, there's a bunch of them.

Watched the game today from the Hotel Del Rey in San Jose. Crowd was hugely in favor of Argentina and ecstatic when they won. Bartenders all dressed up in blue and white. I'm not a huge soccer fan but have been enjoying the world cup games and find the playing at a high level. I thought Netherlands had a slight edge most of the game, they are probably wishing they switched their goalie like last game. I imagine BA will be buzzing with soccer excitement right up to the final game with Germany.
BORING for all of 120 minutes.But it was life & death for miliions in Holland and Argentina, and elsewhere. At this point of the competiition, players are dead dog tired and covered with bruises, you seldom will see a scintillating game like in the 1st or 2nd round. Our love-hate relationship with Argentina does want to see a last explosion of joy enveloping Argentina before the economy implodes, and bewilderment and misery encased the country for another decade. Take it for what it is worth. But the quick exit of African teams are a good examples of disorganized & corrupt national football associations. We also see that Brazilian raw talent & energy has now been offset by technological & scientific advancements in training & preparation, physically, mentally, psychologically. An example, the best athletes used to go offense once upon a time, but today, defenders are on par with attackers as athletes. We are talking about size, strength, speed, etc. That is why goals are so often hard to come by.
So heres to a great game for the players and fans. No red cards, and no sour milk.
It ought to be a good one tonight. Germany with a very talented and organized squad, though I think the opinions of many have been swayed by the walkover against a poor Brazil side. As an Argentina fan I'm concerned about the one day less rest after a grueling win over Holland, while Germany barely worked up a sweat.
I don't think Argentina are getting enough credit from many pundits. Their defense has been one of the best in the WC. If Higuain can continue to show up to complement Messi Argentina have a shot. If Aguero can salvage a poor and injured WC with one decent performance then even more of a shot.
Pretty much a crap shoot.
I think it all hinges on what kind of day Messi has.
Argentina will play a deep defense, inviting Germany to move upfield, which should create opportunities for Messi to catch them with a thin defense.
It's unfortunate that he won't have Di Maria to feed him the ball, so let's hope that the rest of the team can step up.

Disappointing loss for Argentina. Thought they had 3 golden chances and Messi makes the one on one 99 out of 100. Feel for the Argies as it would have been a big shot in the economy as well as their spirits. Thought the defense was great and there was a period in the last first half where Germany was sloppy. Bummed out for them and me.
I think they did well. Germany is tough to get over on, but the Argies put up a good fight! At least they did better then in 2010!
Argentina had chances to go ahead, but it was not in the cards. And so Germany playing with disciplined patience, waited until almost the end of OT for that 1 breakdown by the Argentine defence to win World Cup 2014. Up until then, the combination of great defensive formation and play by Argentina kept Germany at bay quite easily. Argentina can be proud even as Germany reclaim their rightful place in World Soccer. And in doing so, becoming the 1st European team to win in the American Continent.
Surprise that Cristina "botox" Kirchner did not make it to the game. Angela Merkel did, criscrossing the Atlantic at least more than 1 time. Perhaps that is why Argentina lost. The difference between the 2 teams is so marginal you are left looking upwards to the heavens for answers as to the outcome.
A friend of mine opined that he wanted to see the Arges win because for the next year he'd rather listen to them crow than listen to them cry.
But I didn't see anything for Argentina to cry about.
They played a great game.
Their defense was superb.
They had several opportunities to score.
They were saved from one goal by an act of God.
The officiating was balanced and void of any genuinely questionable calls.
2nd place in the World Cup is a laudable achievement.

Argentina have little to be ashamed of but will have many regrets. Surprisingly, almost shockingly, their defense was damn near impregnable throughout the WC, but their vaunted attack let them down. Of the FAB4, Messi, Di Maria, Higuain and Aguero, only Messi really showed up, and he couldn't do it alone. Yesterday they had chances but couldn't finish. Higuain with a lovely wrapped gift from a horrible back pass that he scuffed horribly. Messi had a chance but missed as Neuer gave him a fairly poor angle. Palacio had a chance but a poor first touch off his chest allowed him only a poor effort at a chip.
So, many regrets about a final they very easily could have won in regular time. And yes Jackson, many Argies will find a lot to moan about despite their team's run to the final. And despite being the single handed attacking force, some of the Messi haters will be out in full force. They've been lurking awaiting their opportunity.

I can't decide which was better TV. 3 hours of watching the game or 3 hours watching the riot. I noted that Argentina youth are skilled and clearly experienced brick breakers. Finally, productivity in the workforce provides more rocks per brick than other countries.
The team did not go to the big fan welcome today in centro. Authorities could not assure their safety.

A friend of mine opined that he wanted to see the Arges win because for the next year he'd rather listen to them crow than listen to them cry.
But I didn't see anything for Argentina to cry about.
They played a great game.
Their defense was superb.
They had several opportunities to score.
They were saved from one goal by an act of God.
The officiating was balanced and void of any genuinely questionable calls.
2nd place in the World Cup is a laudable achievement.
