As I stood waiting for the lights to change, a scruffy, grey-haired guy aged mid-sixties, wearing an old denim jacket, sidled up to me and said something unintelligible to me. This is a well known scam. It works best with foreigners.

The scam is this. One or several guys watch who is leaving a privado. Then they approach the cliente that has left the privado, flash some type of badge, and state that being in the privado is illegal. Furthermore, they might state that the privado is being staked out for drug use or some other illegal activity such as privados using underaged girls.

At this point they say they are taking you to the Commisario or police station. Most people get the hint and bribe themselves out of the situation, which is easily done with 20, 40 or 50 pesos. Of course the guys want hundreds of pesos.

This happened to me so many times that I decided to go the police station just to see what the game was. Well, before we reached the police station they decided we should talk in a cafe. I gave them a few pesos and left.

These are either off duty police officers, ordinary guys who have found a badge that looks official, or real police officers.

The easiest way out is to pretend you don't understand a word of Spanish and just walk away. If you become engaged in a conversation they will not be happy until they have extracted a bribe.

I don't think real on duty police officers are involved in this. The police know where every privado is and the police receive bribes from every privado. The privados are protected.

However, occasionally privados are raided for using underaged girls so it is possible that occasionally the police stake out privados.

P.S. Another way out of this is to deny you were in a privado. Since privados are usually large apartment complexes, you can insist you were visiting friends in another departamento. Say you have a wife and would never consider visiting a privado, or state that you are not attracted to Argentina women and you would rather have sexual relations with Rin Tin Tin, lassie or Sea Biscut than an Argentine girl. This should piss them off.

Claiming you are gay and asking for directions to a good gay night club also does the trick.

However, unless I missed something, there is nothing illegal about visiting a privado, is there? I recall another thread that stated that prostitution is in the gray area, neither legal nor illegal. Therefore, it would also be a scam that works best on foreigners who may not know the local rules.

It is not illegal to be in a privado. The worst these people could do (assuming they are real cops and that there is something going on in the privado) is summon the supposed customer to court, though even that is unlikely to happen. Most will bribe fearing a court citation arriving home and the wife catching it first.

Whoever does engage in conversation should deny paying for sex (actually it wouldn't be illegal to pay for sex to a prostitute who is by herself, but paying a madame for sex can imply that the place engages in "trata de blancas" which is illegal) require their police ID (which is not a badge, but an ID card, badge means nothing) take down note of their name, rank and "LP" (eh-leh-peh) which is their file number, and address them by rank and name (Cabo Rodriguez, Sargento Perez, or whatever) This will usually dissuade them, since they perfectly know that such behaviour can get them in a bit of trouble.
