Actually H-99, not so fucked really. The main expat district of Guangzhou, near the Garden Hotel, has a lot of people around that speak some to good English. Learning English is a big thing now in the trading cities so a lot of people now speak some.

Girls (SW) hang out across the street bridge at the Mango Bar, but they also walk back and forth in front of the Starbucks on the G-Hotel side. They all know "mah-saa-gy / fucky / sucky / money". I hate to sound like some bigot from the '50s, but that is how most of them talk. You have to mime a BJ using your circled hand and mouth to show them what you mean.

You're dead on about the smog in south China, Mark. I noticed that immediately. And of course my impressions were formed as a short-term visitor (and a non-mongering one at that) I also visited there in "winter," and can see how 35 degree plus days of summer can be agonizing. But as a guy who has traveled a lot everywhere else in the world other than East Asia, I was amazed at the progress on display there. I'm not in any hurry to go back, as I also percieved that (with the exception of HK) unless one speaks the local language he's pretty well fucked (or not fucked, as the case may be. ).

Funny, I just got back from visiting these three cities, and the last thing I would do is describe them in negative terms. Are they just filthy and polluted? I don't think so. They have smog, in amounts that's about the same as Los Angeles, I guess. But there were no heaps of trash strewn about everywhere, no broken sidewalks, et cetera, the way it is in just about every city in South America. They favorably compared to Buenos Aires in many ways, in my opinion. Not that BsAs is a bad place to visit, not at all.

Hong Kong was by far the nicest, of course, but the mainland Chinese cities were great places to visit, with interesting stories to tell, straight-forward, correct people, good food, and first-class tourist facilities. I can't comment on the mongering scene, as I brought my own poon tang with me. But from fake Chanel handbags to top-quality handmade furniture, everything was for sale in China. I'm sure that some of the top-quality ass I saw parading around is up for bids as well.

Don't want to turn this into a TR, but:

There are days of every year in HK where they have smog inversions (way, way more than LA, where I live) Some that are so bad the air is classified by the HK gov as non-breathable (never happened in LA) and everyone is told to stay inside, close the windows.

Even when the air is clean, walking around the city you smell some of the worst smells you would not want to imagine. They send out armies of cleaners every night, then by 5PM the next day the gutters are 5" deap with trash and getting worse. Traffic is crazy. From 5PM to 7PM every night it is wall to wall people. You move constantly touching those around you.

Guangzhou gets 200+ days of rain (bad rain) a year. Half of the others are windless. By 11AM I am using eye drops to wash the exaust dust out of my eyes. Locals are mostly use to living there, but by 35yo, everybody has a cough and hacks / spits a lot. I've had carbon monoxide poisoning 3 times just standing on the streets in busy distrtics. If the daily rain is light, it can be almost that bad and hot and damp.

Mongering in HK can be OK (See ISG) but China is an odd bird story. Most, but not all, SW just started giving head within the last year for the first time.

And they would not be considered good looking or good f*cks by BA standards. Unless you just love asian women as a fetish.

I spend 2-3 months out of every year there. When your just touring around it all looks good. When you said "straight-forward, correct people" I did not know if I should laugh or vomit.

All and all the place is OK and most of the people are OK too. But if you like China. There are WAY nicer places to go.

You forgot to mention that the very same conditions occur in Every major city in the USA, Los angeles has the same broken sidewalks, smog, and illegal dumping.

"Every major city"? Well, maybe, if you look in the ghettos hard enough you would be right. The cities I know best are New York, Chicago, Washington, D. C. And Philadelphia. But so far as a visitor and the areas he would visit are concerned, they're all cleaned up far, far beyond anything I've seen in Latin America. And that includes Buenos Aires, which I find wonderfully refreshing in its decrepitude, with dog shit everywhere (Porteno land mines), cartoneros pushing grocery carts full of trash on even the nicest streets, and legions of pickpockets.

There's never been anything really worth visiting in downtown Los Angeles for a visitor, and the only view I've ever had of that part of town has been from a car, whizzing past. The areas of SoCal (because face it, LA is just a very small drop in that sea) that I do know are some of the nicest places in the world.

But what struck me dumb in recent weeks was the realization of how East Asia has catapaulted itself past Latin America when it comes to development. 30 and 40 years ago, East Asia was one of the poorest places on the planet. By gosh, when I started poking around, I was surprised at the modernity and progress everywhere, while if you step off a plane in Lima, Buenos Aires, or Caracas, you can see how time has virtually stood still for half a century.

For an American, of course, it's also important to keep in mind that the economic geography of the U.S. is different from many other places on the globe. In the U.S. the richest areas are usually the "suburbs," with city centers being the focus of poverty. In much of the world, including Buenos Aires, it is generally the opposite.

Although I have yet to make my first trip to BA, I have lived in or spent a lot of time in many large cities and prefer them to smaller ones. Large Asian cities are filthy and polluted (Guangzhou, Manila, Bangkok, HK, Shenzhen) as are many of the smaller ones.

Bangkok is a smelly toilet with 6 nice malls, some nice hotels, a shit load of Go-Go and beer bars, 100 skanky-ugly-flat chested-square bodied-bored to be with you whores for every half way good one, and around 1 million ass hole hucksters constantly pushing you buy the worst made crap on the earth.

Pattaya, possibly the #1 mongering destination on the earth, is the biggest tourist trap shit hole on steroids you can imagine. Wait, sorry, that would be an insult to shit holes. 200 skanky-ugly-ect. For every good one, more smelly than Bangkok, hucksters 3 times more aggressive than Bangkok, streets flood with raw sewage when it rains (it rains almost 200 days a year) and fucking dangerous. Between 5 and 10 mongers a month die of injury, robberies or poisonings (those are the ones reported in the local press) plus beatings, snatch and runs, pickpockets, drugged drinks, room robberies (all reported monthly in the various Pattaya press outlets) and regular shakedowns by the local police (reported in the various forums)

Every city I have been to in Mexico has been an absolute shit hole. I can't even start with how fucked up this country is because I'll never be able to stop. I hear Cabo and Cancun are both nice, but except for the ocean you may as well be in the USA. Have not been, do not know. Most descriptions of Central AM cities rate them as bad to worse.

I am a voracious reader of research and forums and I suck up info like a vacuum. From what I have found out about BA I cannot wait to make my first trip. I am trying to set it up for May, but if I can work it out I will be there sooner.

As I said I have not been yet, but from what I have seen you guys that are bitching either don't know how good you have it, or are just trying to keep the rest of us away so you can hog it all for yourselves.

I agree BA is very depressing to live in long time. I've been here for over two years and I just want to shoot myself. Nobody should move down here. If the depression doesn't get you, then walking around at night will get you, and if neither of those get you, you'll probably get kidnapped at a stop light. Then you will be held for ransom and anally raped with a broom handle. Definitely move to Costa Rica instead, and hug a tree for me while you are there.

I am just saying that it is a big city. I've had no problems walking at night either, but I know things can happen rather quickly. Big cities are inherently dangerous and made up of mostly concrete. After a while it can leave you longing for wide open spaces, fresh air, and sunshine. You just can't have everything all at the same time. I need that thing they had on Star Trek to beam me around to 4 or 5 cities each day. Having said that, I love BsAs. I am just not sure I could live there full time because of the lack of nature and fresh air. Costa Rica would certainly have more nature by comparison.

BsAs is all concrete and has so much bus pollution. Sun is hard to find because of the buildings, and fresh air is non-existent. Grass can only be found in the few little parks they have. Most of the grass is beaten down. Besides parks, you can see a few trees growing out of the concrete on the sidewalks, but only on a few streets. The air is terrible because there is no greenery and too many buses spewing black smoke. And you can never escape the noise no matter where you go. It is really a depressing place to live for very long but can be fun for a visit, if you don't mind sitting on a plane for a minimum of 22 hours roundtrip. There is also a lot more danger in BsAs than this message board would suggest. Walking around at night is not safe at all.

Your last statement which area are you talking about?

I live in London and there are areas I don't like walking around during the day!

In most if not all large cities there must be areas to avoid after dark.

Definitely Costa Rica is the better choice. Argentinean women are fat and ugly and worthless in bed and will steal you blind. And Black has raised its prices to 350 US. Also Argentina has a polluted water supply and recently had outbreaks of cholera. They don't vaccinate here and you could easily get rubella ("German measles") and that makes most people sterile.
