For your review I present you my list to which I have added Tequila Tim's can't miss recommendation for a hotel.

Please remember to always do your homework before deciding where to stay as prices and locations vary widely. Anyway, this is what I came up with:

Downtown Asuncion: these places are characterized by easy access to the privados and the tourist attractions. The downside can be the noise and drab surroundings.

    1. Asuncion Palace Hotel (recommended by Tequila Tim). Read Tequila Tims review posts about this place and make sure to thank him.

    2. Aspen Apart & Hotel. The only place I could find downtown with apartment rentals. About four blocks away from the Asuncion Palace Hotel.

    http://www.aspen.com.py/

Outside of Downtown Asuncion: these places are outside the city center which requires either a car or public transportation for access. For those looking for a more tranquil setting. This is where I found most of the apartment rentals.

    1. Residencia Nazareth Apartments: the website says it is about ten minutes from downtown. Provides references from a diplomat at the UN and another at the Italian Embassy.

    http://www.residencia-nazareth.com/

    2. Candlewood Apart-Hotel: Located near Shopping Del Sol. About a 15 minute drive to downtown Asuncion. Has won a couple of international hospitality awards.

    http://www.paramantahotel.com.py/can.../en/index.html

    3. Don Gerardo Apartamentos (this is where I decided to stay). Located in a nice quiet suburban neighborhood. The neighborhood has cobblestone streets and lush green lawns with houses that look like mansions. Supermarket and bus stop is located within a five minute walking distance. Has a receptionist 24 hours.

Its upside is also its downside as it is located about a 20 minute drive to downtown. Costs for a one way drive to downtown on a colectivo is $2800 Guarani and for a taxi it's about $42000 Guarani (note $1 US = $4040 Guarani). Internet connection works half the time. Costs for a one bedroom apartment (Royal Suite) are $600 US per month for one person and $700 per month for two. Daily rental is $35 US per day for one person or $45 US for two. The apartment has a furnished kitchenette and living room. The website says continental breakfast is provided, but I have yet to see it (no big deal though). I'm not sure if this place is chica friendly as the owner lives here with her 17 year old daughter.
