I got food poisoning there as did two other people I know, on separate occasions. In general there is an issue with food safety in this country as the hot food holding temperatures are too low (notice how nothing is ever steaming hot?) and the cold food holding temperatures are too high. I have worked in a couple of kitchens here and I have observed that there are no thermometers, no hand washing sinks, and no chlorine testers. Food is routinely held at room temperature for long periods. Dirty dishes come in to the same place as the clean plates go out. Three compartment sinks are necessary for proper dishwashing and these are non-existent in Argentina. Salad bars lack sneeze guards and are never iced down. In the case of 1800 I observed that there was no hand sink in the kitchen and that they did not even have the "steam tables" turned on. As a result I only ate salad and bread but I still got very sick. Another popular technique I have witnessed here is cutting up chicken and then beef without changing, bleaching, or otherwise sanitizing the cutting boards and knives. A sure recipe for salmonella. Probably whatever knife they used to cut the salad bar veggies was the same knife they used to cut the chicken which was probably delivered in an unrefrigerated truck.

For the life of me I cannot imagine how Argentina ever got the reputation of having good food. It is bland beyond belief, completely unimaginative, poorly executed, badly presented, uniformly lukewarm, over salted and over sugared, and just plain puerile and juvenile in every regard. I would describe it as adolescent.
