I take the buses all the time in BA, unless I am going to a place near a train stop. When I go to Plaza Serrano, the 39-3 bus take me right to the Plaza. If I where to take the train to Plaza Italia, I would have to walk 10 blocks south, more or less to get to Plaza Serrano. Same thing is true with a few other places. Most of the time I get a seat, unless I go during rush hour.

For someone new, just buy one of those "guiat" books they sell at all the news stands, and learn to read it. After that you should be able to take buses without a problem.

If your visiting BA for week, taxi might be ok, but if your visiting for a while and have time, buses can save you allot of money on taxis.

DAMNNN You got me! I love Seinfeld! I haven't yet tried to read TV Guide in it but I might. I'm sorry I've been too harsh on public transport in BA, but this is because I used it more than I would have wanted to when I was a language teacher, going from one company to the other, it was hectic! When I changed my job, I promised myself naver to take a bondi again.

BTW there's a very funny song by an Argentine band called "Asado Violento". The song's name is "Two bondis" and it describes the worries of a guy in love with a girl in Gran Buenos Aires who has to take two bondis to see her. It's in English:

Subways work well and you can travel almost like a human being unless you take it at the rush hour. Then, it's like cattle or sardines. Oh, and you can only pray someone doesn't decide to commit suicide.

A shocking opinion! I like the bus system here. Cheap, even at $1.10, and they will get you anywhere you want to go. No offense to the subte, but sometimes with the subte, you can't get there from here. I think Chanel likes the subte because she's a Seinfeld fan. Or not.

I have been using versions of this program for 10 years. While the menu was never very freindly and it is in spanish.

If you tell the map where you are and where you want to go it will map out walking, driving or BUS routes (with numbers)

And while there are many agressive bus drivers the truth is if one wants to ...you can move fairly simply to any point in buenos aires with hardly ever more than two bus changes.

1. Are the buses privately owned or owned by the city? 2. How are the routes determined? 3. Is there a bidding process for routes? 4. Why do they wind around in the city?

Frankly,

I've learned to take the bus quite a bit, yes it does save a few peso's but I also enjoy the experience durning the off hours.

I especially enjoy the number 59 route. As an example, say your staying in Roxana's apartment. If you take a cab into Micocenter its going to run you about 10 pesos, ruffly $3 dollars.

But by walking two blocks up to Las Harris it's 90 centovos and it will drop you off half a block from the El Alamo, or right in front of Gysell's apartment.

Once your downtown, of course your options are endless.

Very nice! Do note that since this video was made the normal fare is 90 centavos, up from 80. Now, even El Sid and Exon have no excuses for avoiding the colectivos. I would like to see them sitting next to each other on the 59 while heading to Newport. Que cute!

Small guia 't' is 5 pesos, the larger one was quoted at 15. The vendor was out of the large ones. I bought a small one. Good to carry around, but the print is awfully small. Purchased from one of the newspaper / magazine vendors which are all over.
