Onda does mean wave. I am not sure about all the differances in dialect between Argentine and northern Mexican, but with the Mexicans I deal with here in Cali the standard phrase is "Que Onda" and is a very common greeting meaning "what's up" or "how's it going", "how's the wave". So I am sure that being told "good wave" can't be all that bad, especially after you just nailed her.

Onda does mean wave and it's uses as such is practically the same as in English. Radio frequency (short wave - onda corta) wavy hair (pelo ondulado) and so on but the sea waves are OLA and not ONDA.

I wonder if there is a more comprehensive and targeted way that we can search for things on this site than to have to do it the very general way. And searching for "onda" also has hundreds of other posts in different threads outside of the spanish phrases section. I have read occasionally people lambast others on here for not doing enough searching, but what if the search itself is one of the key problems?
