I've been reading this forum for a couple of hours now, what an awesome resource! I'll be in BA towards the end of January, can't wait to familiarize myself with the city as an adult (last time I was 13). Anyone have a decent apt for a week, or want to chill? I'm fluent, if that helps. Thanks

    Not soon enough

My vice account is funded for the trip. Feb is going to be crazy. My goal is to get through this trip with no bribing the cops.

    New to Forum

Greetings, Just found this forum. I'm in BA until mid Feb and would like to find fellow mongers who are interested in getting together for a beer sometime.

In my state, on the back of every lottery ticket it states, 'Prize money equals 50% of sales. ' This means the following:

    1) If you play this game with a dollar 5 times you will end up with 3. 125 cents on average.

    2) If you lose it is not tax deductible but if you win you will face state and local taxes of up to 45.

    3) So you will end up with barely two cents on the dollar after taxes, on average, if you buy a one dollar lottery ticket five times.

There are some problems with the assumptions behind this, namely that the maximum loss is 100% and the maximum win is infinite, so returns are lognormally distributed instead of normally distributed, but even if you correct for that, the results are dismal.

Casino gambling reminds me a lot of shooting heroin. It probably will turn out badly in the short run, but if it does not, it will definitely turn out badly in the long run.

Good point. I was trying to explain to my 13 year old the basics of casino economics (I. E. The odds are always well in the favor of the house).

I'll second what DR says. You can gamble at home. The chances to enjoy prime Argentinian meat (at least for me) are less plentiful at home. Knowing a few folks in the Bs As gaming industry makes me even less inclined to donate my hard-earned dollars to the casinos. If you need some excitement, put your Rolex on the outside of your sleeve and walk around one of the seedy neighborhoods, late at night (good cardio workout).
